The point I took away from this is that you can't kill the guardian anyway, so you might as well not even try.

If you leave the room, but convinced Lazel to follow your order, she won't attack you, but will doubt her intentions. Regardless, you can leave the room and still enter the artifact - which will change a few dialogue options. Which is what I did, because Vlaakith is not my queen, and I kinda want to find Orpheus if he's somehow alive.

I let shadowheart murder lae'zel in the camp, so I didn't have to worry at all about keeping her happy
