"Pole plant, over with the hip" I was repeating that in my mind last season when going down bumpy steeps. Helped me get my mind together.

is 'over with the hip' the same as 'change the hip from over the old foot to being balanced on the new foot'?

Sideslipping will over time make it icy and make the run harder for people who would normally put turns in .
Side stepping with 30 /40 cm gaps would help preserve the slope.
I'm all for beginners and intermediate progressing bit Sideslipping ruins the slope.

I like that step turn technique ❤ I sometimes need to get out of a sticky situation where I ski - Whistler and Blackcomb BC. I don’t seek it out but there are times. Good to know ❤❤❤

I knew stuff and learned stuff.

hint1 - On one occassion I needed to borrow poles which happened to be adjustable. That's when I discovered my own poles were 1 inch too long! Pole plants on steeps and moguls were much easier and smoother with 1 inch shorter poles. This issue wasn't noticable on easy terrain. I equate this to the critical height adjustment of a bicycle seat and the resulting pedal effectiveness. hint2 - carry an extra pole basket. mine slipped off into the deep powder and I was crippled from skiing steeps/moguls the rest of the day....

One of the most important tips I would give is to be moving before starting the turn, it is much more difficult to start a turn from a static position, but if you skis are sliding forward it is way easier.

Great vid. I’ve been struggling with steep pow on skis, and it’s quite frustrating because I’ve snowboarded for over 25 years and have no issues on the even really steep stuff when on a board. Shredding pow on a board is so much easier.

The steeper the better : your weight does the turning. Genuine. Don’t resist the slope, lean into it. Less tiring, more fun. The first turn is the most difficult, cause you need to overcome your apprehension. Wherever I ski, I always look for the steepest part of the slope, as,it is less skied, and requires less effort.

I like this video, thank you. I had not been given this wisdom. but worked it out through trial and error, and error, and error. Never got seriously hurt, but often retreated to apres-ski in advance of boo-boos I would feel even before a soothing shower prior to going to bed.

Stopped in to make sure you mentioned jump turns. Good job. Keep the pointy tips downhill!

I like this, this is classic no risk alpine skiing, for much more difficult situations than this.

steeps are not hard but tight chutes are. Steeps are actually quite easy just commit to the turn.

If you sideslip go ski something you are ready for and don't ruin the snow for the rest of us!

commit and maintain your rythm.........rythm is important... also it helps to have a pole that you might feel is a little long for you.

This assumes you have nice snow to ski in. New England ICE requires a whole different technique. But great advice nevertheless.

First video I have seen on the subject of handling steeps that mentions, respects and addresses the fear learners face when they go up the gradient.

I moved New England area in the US from Europe and MAn is it icy over here! No joke icy, as in skiing down a sheet of glass! Defiantly not my fave skiing, but I'm doing fine. I am going comb through your videos to see if you have anything to help me stay confident on icy slopes.

Or you could learn to snowboard rather than pizza pieing down freshies!

Side slipping is trash advice and results in a ruined slope for skiers who are actually skilled enough to be there.

Dont lean back or forward. You weight has to be on the top of ski binding. You have to commit yourself every turn you make.

Think I’ll just do one black for my pride then take a few reds over to where I’ve got a table booked for a long lunch. Excellent lesson though!
