only frontend code is opensource, not the important part (crypto/mobile app code etc)
ОтветитьNo autoupload because the app would constantly need to ask for the user's password.
Why not have each account have a key pair where the private key is stored encrypted and asks the user to input the password to see photos, and the public key is stored without encryption and is used to encrypt content?
By using the public key to encrypt photos, the app won't need to ask for password when encrypting things, and at the same time, photos are still securely stored because they can only be decrypted with the private key, which is encrypted at rest.
Is there any downside to using this?
In what part of multiverse closed-source backend with ill-written open-source client is FOSS-compliant?
And why do you need this when you can host yourself instance of nextcloud?
Seems decent for some things if you happen to be self-employed and need a little more redundancy in your storage of important files. More redundant than keeping everything in your house anyway.
ОтветитьTo expensive for me
ОтветитьHow about using Mega for large amounts of data although it is cloud encrypted, not local
ОтветитьProtonmail is nsa made.
ОтветитьA fully on device encrypted lifetime alternative to pcloud is icedrive. I haven't tried it since when I found it I already bought a lifetime subscription on pcloud, but it's worth checking it out.
Ответитьnice video as always.
ОтветитьI always wondered how services like mega handle encryption and never ask for my pw
Ответить27$+ per month seems so good 🥴 I can rather buy SSDs and host it myself and still save money 😂
ОтветитьIt is open source someone can write a simple sync over their api.
ОтветитьThat service is mega expensive.
ОтветитьIs there a privacy aware tool for automatic photo tagging?
Google is pretty cool for that unfortunately
Is there a alternative that can be hosted by myself?
I mean a file server isn’t something special but one which comes with an app that automatically syncs the pics on your phone?
Icedrive is like pcloud, I'd say.
ОтветитьAnother great option is Degoo.
ОтветитьUnrelated to the product but what Linux distro are you using in this video?
ОтветитьI have discoverd the Infomaniak kDrive and I lov it! It's a swiss solution and a full ecosystem!
ОтветитьThank for the info, I'll stick with Nextcloud.
ОтветитьHi! You mentioned that pCloud was the only competitor with encryption .... check out also Tresorit
ОтветитьSorry, I don't consider this product open source. It is because the backend code is *closed sourced*. Without the backend, the whole thing won't work, at all. And their reasons of not open source the backends is laughable to anyone have a little bit of system architecture experience.
So, no thank you.
In the long run it would probably be more affordable to buy an Android phone with at least 256 GB of internal storage and up to 1 TB SD card support and then sync all required files between phone and PCs, laptops using Syncthing.
ОтветитьOoook? So you are basically saying it's useless? As the power of Google Photos is the A.I that automatically tags photos, so I can search for something like "Rome Red Car" to see all the pictures from Rome that included a Red Car somewhere on it. Or something like "Adam Sandler and Me" to show all photos with Me together with Adam. Most of us takes random pictures every day and there is no way in hell that I would sit and tag each one of them manually!
ОтветитьInstead of pushing TempleOS(I Know its a joke) but maybe rather mention SerenityOS as it could actually run this app, and its as open source as it gets
ОтветитьFor the whole video I was starting at the poster with color palette. I thought that are color names I could use in CSS, but I've checked and they are not. Too bad 😁
ОтветитьI am using mega. It will be hard to convince me to change. You mentioned PiCloud as the only one you could find that does encryption as well, try googling Mega.
ОтветитьNot completely open-source, backend code is closed and you can't self host it. It's like saying that Telegram is open source. Maybe yet better than Google in terms of data collecting.
ОтветитьI tried it once but their plans are too much expensive for me.
ОтветитьWhy are you hiding PORCUPINES everywhere? 😂
ОтветитьSeriously, you are the person who will save the humanity from Google. Keep it up
Ответитьi love the minimalist UI !
ОтветитьI tested it a while ago but not having sync for photos killed it for me. And sometimes it does not save changes made to documents but I liked the design very much though...
ОтветитьOnline storage + privacy is an oxymoron. Also anything that you store online is NOT YOURS. It belongs to the owners of the servers. Period.
ОтветитьAnother Porcupines Joke !!!! Hahahahhahaha!
ОтветитьPlease don't advertise things as open source if only part of the service is. In this case Cryptee only open-sourced their frontend making it impossible to use as self-hosted service. 😑
ОтветитьIs it just me or does this video look way better than the last few? Did you get a new camera?
ОтветитьThis seems too good to be true, am I dreaming? Or are there some hidden major flaws?
I have to try this out... And if it suits my needs, the 10GB plan will be enough because I don't have a lot of photos and my text documents don't take up a lot of space.
This would be great if there was a self-host option.
ОтветитьWould prefer to self host, even with the nice encryption. Still understand you need to make coin. Make a "Cryptee Pack" comes with a shirt or hat, usb with the "free" software and it comes in a bespoke box so I can show it off on my bookshelf.. say $160 with one month email support? Or $299 with a swimsuit edition calendar of the developers personally signed and 3 months support ;P
ОтветитьHi Nick, may I ask if I can self host cryptee?
ОтветитьA rare thumbs up from me, for the TempleOS reference.
ОтветитьI wish that pcloud offered the document service that Cryptee is implementing. Pcloud is still my go to since they offer 1 time life-time purchases of the product and encrypted storage. The cost of pcloud continues to go down with use once you've purchased a life-time subscription, and I don't know of any other cloud services that offer this level of affordability and security.
Ответить"Minimalist" is how open source developers say "I half-assed the graphics."
ОтветитьI'm surprised this isn't talking about Mega, but if money is involved that would explain it.
ОтветитьI will keep this in mind but as for pcloud , well if you keep p cloud for more than 2 years you paid for more storage than most of the data plans out there for the same or cheaper ... I am talking about the life plan . Also has android and Linux support. For me there is no competitor at this moment , open source or not for the pricing and the many futures.
ОтветитьI like the hashtag, Sir Nick!🤣
ОтветитьI don't care about self hosting but it would be nice if there would be way to sync all data in readable format offline in case company goes under (as many startups do)
Ответить
