While it is impossible to imagine anyone playing the roles that Nielsen, Stack, Graves and Bridges played, it's interesting to note that according to the ZAZ team, Robert Stack was the only actor who had been their first choice from the beginning to play Rex Kramer. He arguably was also the only one of the four who had some prior experience in sending up his image. The year prior, he had co-starred in a similar kind of straight man role in Speilberg's war comedy 1941.
