Comparators: The Building Blocks of Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)

Does anyone know if they use the ref input , paired up with another AI Channel? Like on an analog input card... I have channels bleeding over from neighboring channels, and the only connection that i can tell would be the ref to the neg voltage.
