About the flipper and watch shops selling to them and getting shut down, id like to see how that goes in court, they wont win, the shop will stay open. Nothing really illegal

When I started collecting I set a broke ass dudes goal and was to spend a grand or less but have in-house movements so it’s fun because you have to hunt and accept the crapieness and flaws that kept the watch at that price point. No i don’t have boxes is Casio or seiko watches part of my criteria is also to not have a redundant movement within the same brand. Obviously I have pieces that just struck me as cool and are watch sin like my Nixon red October but I love it and also watches that I just want in my box just because. It is definitely a personal thing and so many people try to inject their opinions on how it should be done which is crap because most other collections like shoes or knives hats don’t have any other rules besides buy and wear what you want

I’m a car enthusiast, toy collector, and a watch enthusiast. Often times I will have to decide whether to buy that upgraded turbo for my GTR or that Speedmaster I’ve been wanting to get. Luckily I’m at a decent point financially in my life and only use play money for these kind of things when the necessities are taken care of.

Buy what matches your lifestyle.

I’m retired. I could afford to have a Rolex, and in my career I was around the kinds of people that would have respected that. But these days for me something like that would stand out in a pretty negative way. Meanwhile a humble Seiko, attainable by pretty much anyone with a job, gets plenty of compliments.

I disagree with the window shopper. You are not really wasting a sales persons time because they make money regardless on if you buy or not. Plus i dont believe that one should feel unnecessary pressure to buy something just to be considerate. Me for example i like to go the same place multiple times untill i am ready to make the decision but if the price is too high compared to an online retailer i will buy online.

A flipper is not a watch collector or enthusiast any more than the person who hoarded toilet paper or hand sanitizer during the pandemic, to sell at a profit.

Good points by Teddy. But the window shopper i slightly disagree. With zero intention of buying is wasting everybody time, but mostly it is people want to spend their money carefully asking a lot of question, or a young person looking at a watch they aspire to own.

I started because I needed correct timing for astronomy, then got drawn in to just how amazing watches are. The tiniest most intricate machines we’ve ever had. I’ve now started to try restore antique Fattorini pocket watches. I still like a decent wristwatch though.

I work with a Critic, Flipper and Snob.

The critic is my favourite.
“I only wear Tag. For me it’s Tag or nothing”

Me: “Yeah i love the Tags purely for the racing heritage. I love the Monaco, its something different”

His response: “Nah the Monaco is rubbish. Square dials are shit. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH”

I can't say I'm innocent - I don't beleve RM has a reason to exist other than for people to flex their status. Can't see how anyone could find them attractive. That's about the only prejudice I'm guilty of that comes to mind. I don't judge anyone for buying one, if it makes you happy don't let anyone stand in your way. I just find them hideous and then I look at the price and that just baffles me to no end.

Over the summer I took a road trip with a friend. I was wearing one of my favorite watches (which isn't monetarily very much) and I ended up taking a fall and broke the crystal and damaged the bezel. Although it sucked at first, the crystal has been replaced and the case is left with its small scuffs. I don't exactly want my watches to not be in their best shape, but I'm glad I wasn't afraid to wear it because the marks leftover will always be a reminder of one of the best trips I've ever had.

The snobby elitist and can’t affords wind me up equally. Love the watches you love, my last 2 purchases are a GP Laureato and a Seiko 5 ‘peanuts’ both make smile so much. I know people who criticise both watches from the 2 different perspectives. Just like what you like and enjoy what you have

there's really only 2 kinds of watch collectors - those who think watches are cool devices and love to nerd out on watches and those who literally only care about the price, bling and brand of the watch and not the actual watch itself and use it just as a way to flex their wealth. As long as you're the first kind of collector you're cool in my book lol.

For some context. I have a Tissot gentleman and my dad has a JLC Polaris. So my fiend wanted to get an analog watch so I was like ok cool let’s talk about it. He tells me he wasn’t to spend max $30 and I was like crap how am I going to find a watch for $30. Anyway I found a Casio analog watch for him. It’s quartz with a white dial and leather strap and now I kinda want to get it for myself 😂

As a window shopper, I feel that test driving a watch or car is important to know if it will be worth the investment. It's like saying that going to see a few properties that you might be interested in buying is a waste of time for a seller or an agent. I think that is just the type of encounter a seller of these products should be accustomed to. These are expensive items and it is in the best interest of the seller to cater to potential buyers if they wish to earn a commission.

About the window shopper: there's probably a subset of people that are into watches, have 1-2 pieces that are $500-1000 and aspire to something in the $5k+ range but cannot afford it.

That is/was me in NYC recently. While there I wanted to go look at and try on nice watches because I wouldn't really have the opportunity again for a long time. I walked into the GS boutique with my SPB213 and was completely upfront with the sales person and made sure that I wasn't getting in the way of the 1-2 other people in the store who seemed like they would actually buy something. It was a really great experience and he seemed happy to put watches in my hands.

In response to the query at the end of the video, I will say that I could easily become the "rarely wear" kind of person. I have been known to buy white pants, which would look great with a number of shirts, and then never wear them because "they might get dirty." 😬🙄 So... thank you for the info, and thank you to the other commenters here, who will help keep me wearing my watches as long as I am not doing demolition work!

In accordance with his point about not being afraid to wear your watches. That is why I almost exclusively purchase used, and less prestigious names. There are lots of lesser known pre-scratched beauties out there waiting to be snapped up at a bargain. I get them at a deal so the next guy can pay retail and feel guilty about having scratched their new timepiece.

Watch flipping isn't all bad. (Not a flipper myself, but hear me out.) I get the hate, but there are folks out there who aren't going to wait in line for a Moonswatch, for example, but are totally fine paying a premium for that watch by buying it from the flipper who waited. For that enthusiast, the flipper is providing a service that the enthusiast is willing to pay for. If the flipped Moonswatch weren't available, that enthusiast wouldn't be able to own and enjoy the watch. Maybe they don't live near an AD, maybe their lives are too busy, whatever. In that sense, flipping watches can and does advance (or support) the hobby by getting watches to folks who want them and will enjoy them. I know there are drawbacks, I get it, but it's not all bad.
