Hello! This is the closest related video I could find to my problem: Every so often when I switch over to the eraser tool (with E) it automatically toggles "Anti erase". I shouldn't have to hold down alt, since most of the time it just switches to the regular eraser, but having to manually uncheck "Anti erase" every third time or so is driving me crazy. Any idea what the cause could be? I'm using an old Wacom drawing tablet, if that makes a difference. Thank you in advance!

Tremendously helpful that you "preorganize" the presentation around problems users run into rather than "how to use" a particular function. I had given up on using GIMP again because it was just too much of a hassle to track down what I needed because I didn't understand enough to know what I needed to know. Your approach gives a huge "leg up" on this problem. Thanks!

Wonderful stuff.. I learnt using GIMP by watching your tutorials and that is too within a very short period of time! Respect and appreciation for your dedication! For the sake of improvement, I would like to suggest to keep your words speed slightly slow as it will make these videos more easy to understand for people whose native language is not English!

For a second i was imagining Item 7 would be that weir dbehaviour where if you are drawing and erasing in one layer, you can still see what you erased because the color information is there, it's just set it's alpha to be completely transparent, so if you mess up with the export or export to something like GIF that doesn't support alfa beyond 1 bit, you get all the things you thought you erased back. Absolutely fun when you're working on a bitmap font and you suddenly get a garbled mess because the eraser tool kept the RGB channels of your previous strokes intact.

Awesome video! I didn't know about using gray as a color for painting on a layer mask with some transparency. Groovy! By the way, "dialogue" should be spelled "dialog". :) Thanks for posting!!!!!

Re images losing quality...why not do all the manipulating you want to do and when finished, delete the image/layer and replace it with the original.

You managed to scale a layer independently of the other Iv got this job with multiple layers (a .pdf from a scan) & yes ofc Im a Gimp noob ...I cannot seem to drag just one layer into to align it within the ruler guides I was set - without all the other damn layers copying that move OMG what am I not doing or seeing here??

I'll add a comment even before looking at the video because I'm so annoyed at GIMP at the moment: why? Because as a user for about 2 decades I find that recent updates have so totally complicated the "tool set" as to make it unusable to me. For reasons I've yet to figure out, I can select an area in an image and yet cannot delete the contents of that area, cut out that area to paste it elsewhere, or do anything else useful except fill it with a new color or float it and move it but NOT paste it for some stupidly mysterious reason.

I get it: I'm supposed to learn a whole set of new settings for painting, penciling or deleting so that the default that fails me now is changed. Or something. It's annoying to not use it much for a few months and find it unusable now that 2.10 is out in Fedora. Some say Gnome is screwing up GIMP. Well the GIMP for Linux folks had better fix that because I cannot. I can't even go back earlier than installing GIMP 2.10.30 from 2.10.32. Hours and hours I've spent trying to relearn everything I used to think was easy with GIMP.

I'm also a long time user of RawTherapee (RT). RT has added huge amounts of new options with new controls but guess what? The OLD OPTIONS STILL WORK FOR BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY. People coming to it complain about new options that duplicate some features and fail to recognize the benefits of backward compatibility. That's done since RT doesn't overwrite the original--it makes a profile that will work years later to recreate the edited file to work on with newer options. Real compatibility that also confounds users but which has the easiest workaround: use the tool you like and don't worry that another tool can do much the same a little differently.

Edit: OK, this video helped in several ways. I still think that GIMP devs. failed to realize that long time users were being forced back into tutorials every time they monkey with the controls. It's good to add functionality but Linux is not Windows. When Linux does an update the latest GIMP is loaded with all the changes confounding us. It is highly annoying to have to relearn from iffy and often incomplete documentation all the wonderful changes made which blow old ways of doing things.

Thanks for explaining the changes that relate to stuff like cutting and pasting selections, moving items layer changes and so on.

Hello Davies.. Sometimes I fail to save a jpeg with exif in gimp. That doesn't happen always. Though the original file has exif info, after saving as jpeg from gimp, it doesn't show any exif info. Any solution? Thank you.

TIPS FOR GIMP DEVS :
- The simple way to fix the save feature is to unify the Export+Save options or to replace the labeling.. "Save NATIVE" instead of "Save".. that way it's much more intuitive.
- Fix the Select Multiple Layers! This is a ruining behavior on the workflow
- Add the Hand tool , it is a one icon addition that can save so much beginners frustrations
- point 7 and 8 : make the crop to layer AUTOMATIC behavior, same for adding alpha channel, thing that are common sense for users should be automated
Bonus:
- Integrate the SIMPLIFY plug in (to improve the path tracing function since its very bad right now)

So people scale down a layer from say 3000px to 1000px and wonder why the layer has lost quality?
Do they want 1000px to look as good as 3000px? Are they being stupid?

Excellent tutorial - thank you. The thing that most frustrates me is managing image, layer and canvas sizes. For example, it is not (always) clear what the difference between image, content, layer, selection and canvas is. In some cases it is obvious but not in others.

Won't an image lose quality when you scale it up in any software? Unless it somehow remembers the earlier versions (non-destructive transformations?)

Something that annoyed me was the layer boundaries. When I was working with several layers of different sizes and I wanted to paint outside that layer's boundary, it wouldn't let me, I thought it was because I had something selected, clicked Shift+Crtl+A, and still wouldn't let me. Now I understand that the layer boundaries exist and how to change them in the layer menu (perhaps there is a quicker way, I'm still learning).
