Exclusive: Dying Light on Nintendo Switch Tech Review - Another Miracle Mobile Port?

Just got this and Call of Juarez for a $10 bundle.

This is one of the few games that look really good on a 4k. It's insane how close this game looks to the xbox one version. Turning off chromatic abveration and film grain makes it look like upscaled 1440p at times on a TV and performance (input lag) is better with it off.

Well they planed Ps360 version of Dying light from what i remember, so port of ps360 game sounds not that impressive.

What's crazy about the Switch is only JUST NOW are PC handhelds starting to come out that even closely approach the seamless experience that the Switch pioneered...back in 2017. And even still, the Steam Deck and it's competitors (while they're great, I actually have one) aren't as seamless or easy to use as the Switch. Also with games like this and Nier: Automata and The Witcher 3 managing to get ported to Switch, I can only imagine what the Switch 2 (or Pro, or New Nintendo Switch...) will be capable of...

I gave this a try based on the glowing praise it was getting and how much DF respects it. I'm not usually picky about graphics, especially on switch ports (because I like to see the Switch push limits) but this was an eyesore. I think the gameplay is also bad. Overrated game in general.

Its fascinating. I don't understand. How switch can handle this kind of visuals and use around 3-4 wats of power. Clever engineering in practice.

Picked this up from the nintendo e store the other dag in a bundle with call of Juarez both games were only $10 i couldnt pass it up call of jaurez is a decent game as well. In the store dying light by itself is $49.99. So $10 bucks for both was a no brainer especially when the dying light port contains every dlc pack and extda content that exists so yeah if ypu haven't picked it up yet grab it before the sale ends whioch might be funished i got it a few days back and sakebwas ending in a few days

Literally just tried the docked mode yesterday it's so unplayable idk love to know how you got over 30 fps most the time I literally was looking at like 10 fps on the high side switching the resolution to 720p and 480p did nothing towards helping performance

I am BLOWN AWAY with how this game runs/looks on the Switch. I already owned/played it on the PC, but when it went on sale on the Switch, I had to bite. I only played about 4 hours of it on the PC, but on the Switch, I'm hooked.. in portable AND docked mode. Had I not seen the side-by-side examples in this video, I wouldn't have even noticed the visual differences. It's THAT good on the Switch. Compared to other ports, Wolfenstein being a simple example, it's just so much better from a framerate AND visual perspective. Like, night and day better. It just PLAYS so well. From loading to framerate to anything you can think of. It feels polished. If this game was a Switch exclusive, it would (in my opinion) easily be its top seller and a true technical marvel standout.

Here's another thing I noticed on the switch that isn't spoken about in this video. When playing this game in portable mode, the Switch stays noticeably cooler than it does in some of my other games. And that, in turn, gives me incredible battery life while playing this game. It's shocking really. My suspicion is that the patch which fixed the 36fps spikes (and locked it to 30) gave the hardware some 'headroom' - IE - it's not running full-tilt the entire time. Which is also impressive..

Please tell me how you sprint in the game playing on switch

Further research suggests they've capped the game at 30fps and increased the resolution in handheld mode with patches. It's currently $7, so I went ahead on and grabbed it.

This is why I’m not worried about Dying Light 2 going to Switch. If the first one looks good, they’re likely to get the second one right too, right?

Without a doubt the port I love the most is Diablo 3, have hundreds of hours in it.
Having said that if I were to say which three ports I was the most blown away by it would have to be the Witcher 3, Doom Eternal and Dying Light. These three ports go to show how much it can be done with the Switch when you have a dedicated team behind it.
Not only is Dying Light a great port but the game is great, offers a great price to hours relation and the physical edition here in Europe (Platinum Edition) was amazing, I could recommend this game more.
Must buy!

I never played this during it's release generation. When I first played it on the switch, it hit me like a hurricane and shot up to be in my top 5 survival horror games of all time, right there with RE2 and Silent Hill. Such a great game - I even liked the story a lot.

Couldn’t this technically run on my iPhone 13 if it runs on a switch

for me, witcher is most amazing port. this is one and only platform I was able to finish the game due to time limitations, I had witcher 3 on many platforms thru years, pc,ps4,xbox. But possibility to play on commute to work and on a toilet XD lead me to the end.

Hand held is the winner

Why did the ps4 version look so blurry compared to the NS version

A 360 and ps3 versions were planned but got canceled. They may have used a prototype of those ports as a base.

Now imagine if Nintendo added just 2 extra gigs of ram and a slightly strong CPU and GPU

It's not so much what performance you can get with an old chipset, but what people are willing to endure for a brand.

Like IPhone. They can remove ports, add less ram, change things but it's Iphone and the name makes it better. Switch, like the Game cube at the time, the 3ds before that were all under powered. Steam Deck will change all this.

I think this is the main problem with the switch, everybody accepts its underpowered, but praises it when a game is ported to it. These ports are absolutely garbage, but switch owners are just happy to have them. Even if they are the worse experience you can have with the game, its almost like Nintendo fans are willing to pay top dollar for the worst experience they can have. If its a interior experience then it should be cheaper, but Nintendo charges top dollar.

This is an awesome port and with the latest update runs at a pretty smooth 30fps :)

I'm much more impressed with the work done on this, than say the work that was done on Cyberpunk on consoles.

You can forgive certain limitations of hardware, as long as those limitations are pushed to their maximum and you can appreciate the result with all things considered.

What you can't forgive is when tech sold as "next gen" is underpowered for its intent and purposes and the developers are on top of that forced to rush sub par releases out on them due to the unrealistic distributor deadlines.

At least make sure there's no game breaking bugs, even if you didn't have time to push all the visuals.

Techland have shown their quality once again, an excellent conversion which I'm sure Switch owners who never played the original, will thoroughly enjoy on the fly.

Still pretty amazing what this 5 year old handheld with an even older chipset is capable of.

With 1.03 patch, it runs very good! Witcher 3 has long been my favorite "impossible port" on Switch, but I gotta say that Dying Light has taken over that position now that I'm done with the main campaign. It's so sharp compared with any other port, Witcher 3 counted in.

Honestly the most impressive swirch port I've seen to date. I have 30 hours on it, it's incredible what they have pulled off.

I'm not sure if I've already dropped a Message and had forgotten I've already seen the Video but i Watched it again nonetheless lol, Dying Light 1 on the Switch is one of those Dream Ports, right up there with the Witcher 3, Alien Isolation and the Doom Games.

If nintendo put out a switch as powerful as the ps4 pro or one x that could do 4k it would really help with future ports

It's always surprising to see a game run better than Doom, Techland really did a number on this port.

I downloaded this last night thinking it was just hack and slash parkour.
Needless to say I played 6 hours straight lol.

Damn I have to give the developers props this is a great switch port usually I really have a hard time picking games for either ps4 or switch trying to see if the downgrade is worth the portability but I think the portability outweighs the minimal downgrades. This would be an awesome game on the go
