Sons of the Forest - Wish I Knew Sooner | Tips, Tricks, & Game Knowledge for New Players

I am playing this game with my brother and when we accidentally figured out autosorting of logs, we both were mute for like minute before like: "Whoa bro"

Love this concept my tip is give your gun to virgina it has infinite ammo in her possetion and she protects you and shoots cannibals

I have yet to try it so idk if it works but with the rope gun if you shoot birds with it it will make a lot of feathers

Wished we could make signs to label ziplines for new people.

You can get dear with your axe when they're laying down...and you're running through the forest, I got one. Lost the second one, because I was a bit too slow xD

Just hover over the item and click 1 2 and 3 you can literally pull that weapon up just by pressing 1 2 or 3.

Im new to this game and a lot of these recommendations are not actual anymore

My Tip: In single player as of now ( 7/15/23) You can only die two times until you lose

Playing on my private Dedicated Server - Kelvin is not going for good when he dies. He just seems to respawn at some point. Same when you run away from him, the game spawns him back to you after a few minutes

U can Set Item hotkeys, If U Open the inventory, Take some Item in the crafting place and Press the key U want (1-9)

Some of the issues brought up are fixed in the current updates so it may already need a bit of an update down the line, but I've come to include my own tips:

- If you're playing multiplayer and fighting an enemy that is weak to fire but have no Molotov's, light a stick torch and swing it at the enemy. You'll light them on fire with it and it only takes a stick and a cloth (and is more reusable than an actual Molotov)

- Kelvin is good at resource gathering but isn't able to fight, so befriend Virginia (the ballerina girl that visits you quite often) as soon as you can, it'll take a lot of patience and trust building but she'll be able to wield a gun and fight for you. (she does get scared at first if you're holding a weapon so if you see her, press G on PC to put it away. You'll have an easier time befriending her)

- The Forest gave us effigies to build at low sanity, but SotF gives you the option straight away. Take one of those cannibal corpses and cut some body parts off, slap a stick down in the ground and stick your parts on to add some fear in to the enemies (the red mask you can make with resin works almost exactly like red paint from the forest, so that's a better option but an Effigy is still viable for very early game.)

- CANNIBALS REMEMBER YOU. If you hit them enough to make them run, they will remember that interaction and usually inform others of it. This may make some of them think twice before attacking you but may make others angry. So take a moment to think about how your actions will affect how the cannibals think.

- With Hotkey binds added now, it's better to reserve your bag's slots to things like Medicine, Food and Throwables (things you don't want to fat finger in the heat of the moment)

- Most Vehicles Negate all fall damage (excluding the log sleds) so if you need to take a plunge off a cliff for whatever reason, grab your nearest turtle shell or Knight V and enjoy defying physics.

- Bone Armor is very cheap to make but isn't THE cheapest, That goes to Creepy Armor. Take a visit to your nearest cave and kill some of the stronger cannibals, then skin them to receive a piece of Creepy Armor. Creepy Armor is one of the best armors currently available, second in damage protection only to Tech Armor as of July. (Tech Armor is VERY expensive however so it's not recommended other than for the Achievement / Bragging Rights.)

Something like the last game, you can still dry raw food without cooking them

OP Tip. Only use armor off enemies in dire situations.
You can reload the game or sleep, and the bunkers' loot is respawned, so you can spam printer resin and make tech armor very often. I always have atleast a few pieces ready to slap on in caves.

Here is something I found out today if you have a torch you can hit the enemy’s and they will burn to death all though for some of them you might need to hit them more then once I still don’t know if the torch breaks after awhile but it hasn’t yet on me it also makes things easier because while they are burning you can kill them with your axe or some other weapon hope this helps with some people

If you take a drying rack and build a fire under it, the fire will perfectly cook the fish no attention needed

Someone likely has mentioned this already, but you can now assign hotkeys to items. Makes a huge difference.

I figured out hotkeys for items! Put the backpack in the center of your inventory - as if you were going to add something to it. The mouse over the item that's connected to your backpack - a little blank box will show up. Then click a number from 1 to 0. Nothing will visually happen (I'm sure this is something that will be fixed in a patch). Then, get out of inventory - press the number you selected before and that item will automatically be equipped in hand.

instead of making reinforced fires you could make torches and wall torches hehe also dont forget to reinforce stick traps you place in the ground with rocks

Also for hotswapping or binding. When you are in your inventory, hover over an item and press a button 1-9 and it’ll assign a hot key. I dont know how to do on console, but it works for K&M

Good news, hot keys work in the game now. In your inventory, hover over whatever item you want to quickslot and press any # key and it'll assign it to said key

wish i knew to wait like a year before playing this.

There is a sled, you can build one at a 3d printer at a green waypoint in the map.

i just eat raw fish.. .got me an achievement and it doesnt hurt you. two fish to fill you up. also, dont need to cook before putting on drying rack.. you can put raw meat or fish on rack and it will dry just fine

One tip I can give is, use machete on babies, it's so quick even if they jump at you, you can hit them.

I scrolled down for a little bit and didn't see this tip, you can use zip lines to move logs around. Very efficient for long distance log chopping.

If you give the boombox to Kelvin he will turn it on and carry it on his shoulder

My best tip for dual sense controller players is to adjust the settings so that the touchpad buttons are keyboard 1 & 2. The middle one is hard for me to hit but it could work for you. With the right gear, the mountains become the easiest place to survive for me so far. Plenty of fish and water that never freeze. My biggest tip for new players though... always have a full inventory of little things because hunting shacks are your best friend.

what about golden armor suit that give infinite armor on ?

one tip i have for new players: if u spawn at the beach, create a house there if u want, sometimes whenever u sleep there will be mutants spwaning but they can wander off or u can easily take them out, another pro of this is, enemies can only come at you from one direction so you're pretty safe, aswell as there being no grass so babies and other things will be fully visible

Best tip? You can build fly swatter traps using sticks and stones in caves. Find a choke point and you will slay enemies and not waste resources. This kills most enemies in one hit. I found this especially effective in the shovel cave.

Hower over an item in your backpak and press ctrl + (number) you want a short key for that item ;)

you can just put the fish straight on the drying rack and get the same result takes about 2 days for it to dry and it seems to keep indefinitely same with animal meat

There’s a way to duplicate logs 🙊🙈

Kelvin can pick up the boom box in the commands and follow you around with music playing, he will drop it when attacked
