You would think that Peter Jackson, of ALL people, would have fought tooth-and-nail for the Hobbit to remain as ONE movie in order to preserve the integrity of its artistry.

But apparently it doesn't take a ring, it only takes the prospect of buttloads of money to move him towards darkness.

Ironic, truly.

Still take this trilogy over the "Disney Star Wars" trilogy slop!

My biggest problem (among many issues I had with the Hobbit movies) was the inclusion of Sauron, and the fact that Gandalf was aware of him as an active, malevolent force. It completely obliterates the continuity with LOTR, and makes Gandalf being oblivious to Bilbo's ring being THE ring for decades absolutely ridiculous.

Something not talked about here that always really irked me about The Hobbit movies was the fact that they made Gandalf weary of Saruman when in the first Lord of the Rings movie, Gandalf didn't suspect anything about Saruman's treachery. I know that the whole plot eluding to Sauron in The Hobbit never happened in the book. But if they're going to add it to the movie, at least make it line up with and make sense with the LOTR movies. That just always irritated me.

Eh. Not really. It's well established in the Hobbit movies that the dwarves are uncannily lucky, I mean in the first movie an entire bridge falls on top of them but gets slowed down by the walls of the cave, a la Jack Sparrow. You could have picked literally any moment of the dwarves being lucky just because, and it could have fit your script. This moment doesn't stray from the lore of the movie at least by any stretch at all.

As for me, I love the Hobbit movies as much as I love The Lord of the Rings. I am particularly fond of Bombir in the barrel scene. We have watched all six movies at least twenty times and still not tired of them. I have not read the books, as I am not much of a reader, but am going to because of the my love of the movies.

I no longer can take anyone seriously claiming "The Hobbit is a children's book... They shouldn't have made three movies... They just wanted to milk the cow..." While the latter may be true concerning the studio, the Hobbit being a children's book or the number of words in the book has very little to do with how long the cinematic adaption should be. The shortness of the Hobbit is a result of a different narrating style compared to the lord of the rings, not a result of lacking content. Yes, there have been things added in the movies which were not necessary, but sticking to the book in that way would mean to just show a few minutes of the Battle of the five Armies, since it's merely about three pages in the book because Bilbo gets knocked out during the battle. Do you really think people would have liked not seeing the actual Battle? Remember the Quidditch Worldcup in Harry Potter 4? What works in the book doesn't necessarily work on the screen. Don't get me wrong, there is much that I don't like, for example Radagast riding a sled through the forest without getting stuck on a single root, or Thorin surfing a stream of molten gold without burning or Bard firing that massive black arrow with his little broken bow. The things I don't like are unrealistic even for a fantasy movie. Yes, in some places they added too much, but nonetheless I am greatful that they gave the story enough time. Everyone who was read Eragon and has seen the movie on the first book (It is the worst movie adaption of a fantasy novel of all time, because it rushes from event to event without giving the story the smalles amount of timeto unfold, being depicted so you could dive into that world and actually feel it. They massacred the whole novel, no wonder there hasn't been a movie on the second book): Imagine they would have done this to the Hobbit. Comparing to that I much prefer three not so short movies...... (But it's a short children's book!!!!1!!1!!... blah)

Heck, there are scenes in the book they could have cut out, like the fight between the stone giants. But the embellishments like all the running around in the goblin caves, not to mention all the same inside Erebor, the descent into madness of Thorin, and some of the wilder elements in the final battle could have been left out. I really think all the bloat in the adaptation came from orders on high in the studio. Some of them I don't mind, like Tauriel; some I detest like Alfred. The Battle of the Five Armies was fan-damn-tastic, second only to the Pelennor Fields in RotK. Well, at least they brought Jackson back in to direct. Can't imagine what we would have gotten if del Toro had done it.

I REALLY like the Hobbit trilogy! Yes, the barrel scene was cheesy, but other than that it was 3 master pieces.

In defense of the hobbit series it’s almost like the Star Wars prequels it may not be as good film wise but it gives more information on to the world the characters are in. Therefore many fans look fondly on it, sometimes more so than the original

absolutely hated the barrel scene. My cousin still continues to hail it over the LOTR and that is just beyond bonkers to me.

Why does it need to be torn apart and all the errors pointed out? Every film has errors. What is wrong with just watching and enjoying a film for what it is?

OK that said, I recently watched all three films of the Hobbit and thoroughly enjoyed them - and thank God, I mean, Peter Jackson for the humor because, let's face it, all those fight scenes need a little lightening up. Whether I watch them again is another story.

I watched the Maple Edit a few weeks ago and, other than the pacing and tone feeling off during An Unexpected Party (due to the prologue being missing) it's a MUCH better experience.

Honestly, as a casual lotr and hobbit fan I don’t really have a problem with the series as I think it is better to have a trilogy set in middle earth instead of nothing.
