I think people be thinking it's easier to sell it to Netflix if you used an approved camera. Forgetting that your movie actually still has to be good.

The myth goes on. Please read or watch why neflix has these standards. They have a bts film that explains that their specs are a simple best practice film and workflow spec that any professional filmmaker or production would follow. For those who havent worked with broadcasters or commissioners like netflix this may seem perfunctory but anyone who has worked professionally with these third party commissioners would know why these are simple best practice specs and processes to help identify clips in edits avoid issues of grading and being able to move the post around to different departments and deliverables. For one person passion projects there are no such third parties but please be aware that the minute you work professionally on anything narrative timecode sync and clip metadata become a godsend and a necessity. As a producer these standards are the very least that you would want. Netflix specs are a guide of best practice. Use it as that and it will all make a lot more sense and help you avoid making a huge mistake or wasting time in post.

Just a little advice. I've worked on two crappy films. One of the biggest problems I found is some people have no money and are trying make the next big Hollywood action film. It just does not work when your broke.

Make a romance movie girls love that stupid stuff. Comedy movie can work if you don't go to crazy. Also a Sci-Fi can work but you really have to be smart with zero money.

When I say zero money I don't be you don't have money but you don't have Hollywood money.

There is a guy on I can't remember his name he started out with a Panasonic GH2 and a Canon 7D I think his first name is Randell. He made a Netflix movie about a Navy Seal guy buying a house and a portal opens and orcs come into this world.

He's really talented but he said to pull that kind of stuff off you have to wear a lot of hats. I think he even knows CGI. There was a dragon in his film and he made that movie for $15,000 dollars.

He made another movie about Park Rangers defending the park when a portal opened up and Orcs came into this world.

He mostly does commercials for his bread and butter and movies are second. Even after your done you still have to market it.

Its hard to find his channel I'll see if I can find it and post back again.

If Netflix is your bar for ultimate achievement fine, I'd bet most filmmakers would want their work shown at cinemas

Great information. Thanks. Wonderful that you can get such a good Cinema cam for so reasonable a price. The hype surrounding hybrid cameras is insane. It leads us to believe what we own is obsolete every 18-24 months. Also, you're right on re making something creative and dealing with all the practicals rather than obsessing over gear. Most gear heads with G.A.S. probably don't want to hear this. :)

For me, I see it more as something that can have marketing value for regular video clients, saying that you’ll film their project with a Netflix camera can certainly make it seem like their getting more value working with you.
