Head Voice vs Chest Voice

That's head voice, not falsetto. Falsetto has an airy sound and yes, women have falsetto. The other one IS her chest voice, pulling it up all the time is one of the causes of its deterioration.

I prefer chest voice because when a singer singing too much head voice is oversinging.

You're completely wrong. At the start that was falsetto, which is a breathier type of singing that comes from the chest and the vocal chords are spread appart letting the air just flow through. The second was mixed voice which is a combination of head voice and chest voice but certainly wasn't solely head voice. This wasn't a good example of either, that wasn't impressive singing at all. Very ordinary, not unique.

@hermygagala What's impressive about Whitney's singing is that she had so much ease transitiong between head voice/falsetto and chest voice registers. She's The Voice for a reason!

@ThePianoguy89 Chest voice can't really be considered a register. Main registers are Falsetto, Modal, Vocal fry and Whistle. And she is only the voice for some not all. She is very talented, but this video doesn't really depict talent.

@hermygagala Chest register is a register, especially mixed chest register. It is a legitimate register because it allows to travel up to higher notes with fluidity. Mixed chest voice is mixture head voice and chest voice, it's called full voice. Falsetto is not considered a legitimate register and it's Italian for false voice. There's no connection happening in the vocal folds because they split causing air flow to produce the sound. This video does depict her talent as a smooth transitioner.

It is not universally known, or set in stone, as an actual register. Falsetto is a legit register, known universally throughout all the world by all music analyzing professionals. Again you are wrong. And yes falsetto is known as "false voice" but that doesn't mean it isn't a register, and by the way most of houstons singing is done in falsetto.

@hermygagala Are you joking right now?! You are wrong! Chest voice is a legitimate register and she sings in that register most of the time because she's a chest belter. A professional should know that false or "FALSE VOICE" because of its different physiological function of cords. Chest is a connected register and it creates resonance. Falsettos have no resonance and it's very light and airy. Falsettos are mostly used by men immitating female voices, but women still have it too. So...?

Falsetto is used by pretty well all vocalists and all of Houstons 6th octave range is in falsetto as is most all vocalists man or woman. @ThePianoguy89 Like I said it is not agreed upon by musical professionals as to whether or not it can be considered a true register. If it is not agreed upon, or they have not given it a label, then you can't say that it is a register and say it as a statement. It is more of an opinion thing I guess, from the both of us. By the way I am also well educated in music. I am a vocalist and was a harmonica player but decided to focus most of my time on vocals. Sorry for my former rudeness.

I still wouldn't agree to say that falsetto is a legitimate register over chest voice because from what I've learned about chest voice is that it is known as the speaking voice of the human voice. It sits at the normal part of the vocal folds. Head voice occurs when the vocal folds are zipped up about 1/3 of the vocal folds in measurement. Vocal pedagogy and physiology, these things are pretty much objective. It can be subjective from person to person as well.

@stevesg92 Basically that is true. However, everyone has their own breaking point. Some female singers can go quite high up the scales in chest before going into head. The predominant voice on Broadway these days is a mix of legit and chest. You can sing with a "bealty" sound, but do it over and over without hurting yourself.

@swarze Steve, thanks so much for that! She DOES have a very high chest, but when she is doing the Liebestraum, she is in her head. HOWEVER! I don't know anyone who has a better developed chest voice than she does (or did, I guess). I emphatically agree with you. She was one of a kind, and a GREAT vocalist! Thanks again.

Only Whitney could sing in head voice and it wouldn’t be considered “dodging a note.” It’s because both her chest and head voice were extremely developed. Most singers today have weak falsettos/head voices.
