Every once in a while, you’ll come across people who’ll say things like:

“Is bass even that important?”

“You can’t even hear bass - it’s just there to look cool” or even:

“If the bass wasn’t there, it would still sound the same”

Does any of this actually hold any water?

I’m here to tell you though, that bass is monumentally important to how music sounds and feels - even if it’s not immediately obvious.

The best way to show you the difference that bass makes to a song is to play tracks with the bass taken out, then inject the bass back into it.

I’m not talking about just rolling off the bass frequencies in a song though - I’m talking about removing the bass track from the recording. I found a ton of tracks with the bass track completely removed, so in this video, I’ll let them play without any bass and then add the bass back in.

As long as you’re listening on a decent sound system or on headphones, I guarantee you’ll notice a huge difference. Whatever you do, don’t try this on laptop or phone speakers - they just can’t reproduce those low frequencies so you won’t get the same effect at all.

In the lesson, I’ll also talk about the 2 legitimate reasons people might think that bass doesn’t matter, plus the one slightly less legit reason, and what to do when you come across people who say these things.

Of course if you’re just starting out on bass, it can sometimes be confusing to know what to learn first. Scales? Songs? Arpeggios? Reading? The list could go on and on. In my experience though, when you’re just a beginner, you don’t need to focus on a million different things.

In fact, if you just focus on 3 things in your playing and really nail them, you’ll be ahead of 90% of other bass players who don’t work on them. To make it easy to learn these three things, I’ve put together the Become A Bassist Starter Pack. It’s a collection of some of my best material for beginners and it’ll show you what to work on as well as how to get better over time.

To get it, just head to this page:

As always, if you have any questions, just drop it in the comments - I always love hearing from people who are watching these videos.

Cheers,

Luke

There's been a ton of great comments so far and a lot of them comparing the absence of bass with other things, so leave your own by completing this phrase: "Having no bass is like..."

As a bassist,
I don't really care what people think about my pal the bass guitar,
We rock the band, we work with the drummer, we stand in the background and just rock it.
I love the bass guitar,
And the drums,
Drum and bass are awesome.
But bass is my life.❤

I've been listening to metal my entire life and honestly bass is irrelevant and hard to hear in most albums. 90% of the bands don't have bassists that talented, and when they do the bass track is always mixed at the minimum volume.

If you can't hear the bass, you're either listening to 80s Metallica or you need to have your ears checked. If you need another example, listen to Smashing Pumpkins "1979". When the bass kicks in after "..you and I should meet" I still get chills since I bought the CD upon release.

The bass is what makes the band sound HUGE. Like, you can have all the members of the band playing except for the bass, and it will never sound like it actually "kicks off" until the bass comes in.

Great video. Could you help me further? To get our multi genre band moving on I switched from guitar to bass. I know basic rock bass. Alternating country bass. Basic walking blues and jazz bass. Different bass grooves funk etc. Now to the question. When I hear certain songs I hear these odd strange bass lines. They seem to have nothing to do with the song when heard isolated. But in the song they just work perfectly. So I asked our keyboard player. He said its the bass part the bass harmony. Just like classical music its the bass part following the song but moving in other directions. Let me tell you. I just dont get it. Could you please try to explain this with some basic examples ? If you know what I mean?

Bass and drum is for building beautiful scenery with fluffy grass where half naked guitaris can sit on the clouds and give that beautiful sound and solos. Thats what I always say to everyone. Jusst know your place, if you like background just play bass.. but if you like to be the front go with guitar.

Preaching to the choir brother. Don't get me started on this Quantization that happens especially with bassists and drummers that just destroys the life out of every recording. Guitarists also suffer a similar fate, and we can't have honest vocalists anymore. Is rock dead? At this point, yes. Always compression, auto tune, quantize, make the song as pedestrian as you can, One earbud, minimum volume for the "busy" masses.
