Why I Bought an M4 Mac Mini

M1 Max is a goat soc. Kinda like nvidia 1080ti my14” M1 Max will live on… I returned m4 max. Not worth the money for me.

First of all Thanks for the great video sir! That's exactly what I did! I got base mac mini with 10gig ethernet , I use it for torrent, Plex server, tailscale, and got macbook pro m4 pro with 48gb, which I'm gonna return next December to pick up m4 max with 64gb, I think mac mini is great value when you get the base model but once you go up in specs it lose it's value and it reach mac studio value

I think you summed it up perfectly at the end ...buying it is a no brainer!

I didn't have any major concerns about it being the perfect video editing machine as if I can't use it to edit videos, I can use it to record videos, as a storage device, as a server etc.

I do think that once you get to the £1,000+ price bracket, there's good alternatives to consider in the Windows world. Whether it be a self-built PC, a NUC, gaming laptop etc.

But around that £600 price range, I don't think anything comes close to the M4 Mac Mini. 👍

hallo, do you think the base model with 16 gb ram and 256 gb ssd is enough for a student use (programming, microsoft office apps,… etc)?

Hi David, I picked up a base Mac mini M4 a week ago and so far I am very happy with my choice. I paid 700€ and applied for a 50€ refund because the company I bought it from offered it for 650€ two days later. I had been considering getting more RAM and a bit more of storage or even buying a M4 pro Mac mini. For my use case it seems to be powerful enough though.

While my old Windows laptop struggled with Lightroom everything just runs smoothly now so that alone was worth the investment for me.
Editing with DaVinci Resolve even from an external HDD worked as well until it started to lag. I found out I had already completely filled the storage but that was including 170+GB of Lightroom previews. Moved these to the external SSD I store my pictures on and resumed editing without any lagging.

I agree the base model is the best value for money and for me it is a relatively inexpensive way to get into working at a desktop again after having edited on an iPad for some time. I might upgrade at some point in the future maybe when my editing has evolved, so far I am glad I saved a bunch of money especially since my channel doesn’t make a lot of it.

I went from 18’ Mac mini (Intel) to M4 mini base! & MB M1PRO chip to MB M4PRO chip. Both are huge upgrades! Especially My MacBook going to Thunderbolt 5 & hdmi 2.1!

So now the Elgato 4K X should work flawlessly with the Mac mini USB-3 10Gb/s for video game streaming. Right?

Hello David and thanks for the video and lesson you learned by try and error and help others not make the same mistakes. Right now i'm on a Macbook M1 Air 16GB for video editing with Davinci. I work with 6K BRAW files and i have no problem edit them as far as i'm not using NR, effects, Time warps etc. In that cases it's going very slow. I intend to buy a desktop Mac for the same purpose and i was really considering a M4 PRO base model, or a Studio M2 MAX discounted (used or wait for new M4 Studios to get it for less). I like to have more power but money is an object since i'm not make any money so far from videos, but considering doing so. Mini M4 is very tempting i just afraid that in some cases it will be not enough, even if it has double the performance of my current M1 Air. Sorry for the long post. What do you suggest? David, I'm looking to upgrade from a 2013 Mac Pro (trash can) and a 2019 Macbook Pro 16inch (maxed out). The primary use case is video editing in FCP with color grading in Resolve. I was all set on going with the M4 Pro Mini but after watching your videos Im wondering if i should just go for the base model and an external thunderbolt drive? Both models Geekbench scores are more than double than both of my machines... Which I get doesnt mean its like that in real world applications. Appreciate any input.
