I didn't activate holmgang when I said I would, and I died. I called myself an idiot in chat and thanked the healers for not heal spamming me like healers usually do.
I was obviously serious because they played well and it was 100% my fault. They didn't realize it and trolled me until the end of the alliance raid. Might be WoW refugees.

I know this is an old vid. but as a wow player finaly saying goodbye to WoW and trying out FF14
I can say, sadly things wont get better, as game dev only care for end-game and Raids.
I can tell main difference between wow and FF14 is evident. In wow you feel like you are in a permanent marathon, even when not aiming for endgame and ahead of the curve. You are constantly rushing, constantly farming, constantly feel like you are behind and that there is SO much work still to do.
In FF14, I've spend most of my time watching the story and rarely doing "classic quest" of, go there farm 200 random mobs in hopes RNG gives you the 5 items you need for the quest, run across the map to do another quest exactly the same.
wow is a work you hate but NEED to do, and do under the most horrible work conditions and environment.
FF is more of a story presented to you with some game elements that still feels like an RPG
Wow used to care about story and specially world buildig. have secrets all over the game and dungeons used to play a big part in their story telling.
Now all of that is GONE...and they are slowly destrying more of the few little things left to enjoy
I was sub for BrewFest and Hallows end. only to discover, brewfest got mayor changes so they can be WOKE saying "our game does NOT promote alchoholism"....and I'm legit afraid to see what they do to my fav festivity....hallows end...
I told my friends in FF I'll be celebrating Halloween with them in FF, to see if there is a mayor change
but I know even then. WoW mayor event is fly all over the world colecting candies from every single Inn...again...another chore/farm...not a FUN activity

Every time I've wiped in FF14 it really just ends up being 50% of the Party/Raid/Alliance Raid ROFL from the wipe, 45% explain why we wiped and how we can fix it so we don't do it again, and 5% of that 1 guy flaming in chat and everyone laughing/shaming the 1 flaming guy. The game just has positive vibes in the community.

i ran the twinning the other day for the first time (was really hyped for it because of the meme XD) and we wiped on the endboss. i asked in chat, if anyone know what we did wrong. the other 3 were like "nope no clue Lol" and we tried again together. we didnt really do anything different the second time but we managed to kill it. everybody was so chill. im still kinda nervous everytime that i do something wrong coming from wow.... but i never had a bad experience in ff14 dungeon. it even encouraged me to try tanking in healing which i was always to afraid to in wow

the big problem with wow was that it started out as the perfect casual mmorpg, and devolved into a horrific grindfest that would make even the grindiest korean mmo's look good. this created an environment where everyone was just so hostile towards one another, then coupled with blizzards incompetence, a handful of major scandals reaching national television, and a company wide investigation by the feds, the players just about had it at that point and stopped being wow players. they didn't become ffxiv players, they just became mmo players. and imo thats a good thing, since you could attribute wow to the steady decline of mmo games being made in the last decade, its only now started to pick up again with blue protocol, ashes of creation, perfect new world, chrono oddysey, and so on.

ff14 has had the opposite effect for me in terms of dungeon mind set, when i went back to ESO for a little bit, i started every dungeon saying hi (nobody said anything back) then because of all the changes they have done, my old build no longer works even for normal dungeons so i had a guy just yell at me for low DPS and left the dungeon, ive not been back on it since.

I've never played WoW but I can recall there was only ever one time where I had a dungeon/trial group that was frustrated with us wiping. I was also newer to the game and still getting my bearings as a Healer. But they definitely got frustrated and booted me out. Ever since I've mainly only had pleasant (or quiet) Dungeon/Trial runs. I was even tanking a ShBr dungeon once and caused us to wipe at the last boss like 6-7 times. But my Party was still super patient and helpful.

Honestly, I've been playing FF14 for a bit over a year now, and the community's blown me away. In WoW, I never healed or tanked, because they get all the shit, refused to do higher level content after putting up with people's toxicity through Mythic+ and Heroic Raiding throughout Legion and BfA, just kinda kept to myself. In FF14, I barely play DPS, almost always Tank or Heal because people are great to play with, I don't feel forced to do content I don't like... honestly, I've only ever met one toxic player in FF14, a mentor, no less. Queued up for a dungeon as tank while still a sprout, and got a mentor healer who ran through everything and pulled the whole dungeon. Asked him to pull less because I was having a hard time keeping up, and he just went on a tirade how he doesn't even need a tank, how he can do everything by himself, and insulted everyone in the party. Kept spamming toxic shit into chat even during boss fights. Almost convinced me to give WoW another go. Logged on, decided to try tanking, went as Protection Paladin, nicely explained to everyone I'm new to tanking and politely asked everyone to go slow. They proceeded to run through the whole dungeon, aggro the boss with the whole pack on their tail, called me a noob piece of shit, and kicked me. Cured me of any WoW nostalgia real fast. At least in FF14, a toxic player is once in a blue moon, and usually one per party. Not every person in every party 90% of the time.

I keep coming back to this video because I love your reactions in it. After the past 2 years and everything you've gone through, you no longer have the child-like joy you did in this video and so many others around this time. I understand why, I do not mean this as a criticism. Rather, I've seen other people heal from that same base-level anger you have and I hope you can find the same healing. You suffered a tremendous blow, but that doesn't mean you have to let the world break you. I am rooting for you. If you want specifics on how to heal, let me know.

I ran several Dungeons in WoW prior to Cataclysm, and never caused a wipe (as a Priest), but I still stopped joining Dungeons because I'd heard other people having to deal with that kind of response, and all of my Priest's gear when I left WoW was top-tier PvP gear instead of Dungeon gear.

Old video but still.... FF has easily the most toxic community I have ever encountered. People are very fake, living in a designed "nice" illusion, but if anyone is minimally critical or has some feedback about how to improve something, they become extremely defensive and toxic, which makes 0 sense.

In WoW you have a lot of toxicity too. But at least you see people´s real face right away and so you can simply avoid them.

Truth is, everything online is the exact same today. WoW, FF, Facebook... because there is a common denominator: people behind a screen.

Cutscene community are toxic asf. I've played this game for 8 years, cutscenes are lazy, padded content. 60% of the base Expansion are cutscenes with the annoying Scions of Light. Only this Zepla community will take something extremely annoying and try to make it a good thing...like Urianger...

Now I have started WoW this week and some people are patient, but even the patient people still have a low tolerance. At the end of the day it's a completely different game now that I've played it. FF14 combat and dungeons are on rails, which is why people aren't bothered about wiping. You aren't wiping because someone failed to hold aggro or something in FF, you usually just take onto too many mobs or got hit by a mechanic. In WoW, you have way more to worry about, it doesnt hold your hand like FF14 does. So I understand why people in WoW tend to have less patient for human error.

I spend so much time deprogramming people from a lot of the WoW mentality when it comes to wiping. It's sad to see people feel so bad if we all die when half of the time I'm laughing about us dying to something silly. I'm always saying "don't worry, we got this" or "it's all good, it's just a game".

I love your videos and all the knowledge you put out for this game it's amazing n I'm glad I found your channel. I only wish I could force the algorithm to push my videos better. Nobody gets mad when you fuck up an Extreme or a Savage and cause a Party Wipe because you get lost in the Mechanics, we just kinda do a little classwork and Try again with gusto. and keep at it again and again, cheering on the little bits of Progress we make each round, getting closer and closer to Success until you hit that magic moment!

The bit where the guy says "then we waste our time together". 🥺🥺 It's like the FFXIV community has become a support group for emotionally traumatized WoW refugees.

BTW, at the end of the video, I couldn't help notice a small but really useful UI change. When you selected the aetherite travel, it just presented a list, but now it brings up a map and shows where the selected destination is, and the ability to click the aetherite icon on the map. I love that the FFXIV devs continue to make nice little improvements like this. 😊 And on a similar note, I noticed they're kind of against the use of addons, but they're not nearly as necessary because they proactively work to provide a good interface ... whereas Blizzard half-asses it, and you kind of have to use add-ons if you want something decent.

When I first saw Grimm's video about the warmth of the player base, in contrast to the cynicism of the former WoW player, it hits me deeply. I still love Warcraft, but I can't bear to play it. Him using FF14's OST certainly doesn't help. "Contention" from Heavensward brought that sense of melancholy, reminiscence about a wound, long faded, but aching still. It reminded me of the many times in FF14 story when a shared sense of comraderies and understanding overcome mistrust and hatred.

To be honest I don't feel like there is any hope for the toxicity in the WoW community to ever fade after all it's been there ever since the first open beta. Even back then there were already numerous people trashing new players for not doing the "meta" leveling strats or misspeccing and that was before the game even officially released. There were even turbo casuals back then even tho nobody had to pay for any subs yet. Instead they'd said "I got a code so I'll play the way I want".

I can see myself in that video. I'm a former WoW refugee and I remember the first dungeons I did.. I once actually said after something along the lines "Wait.. are we trying it again? I thought that's the moment when we all rage-quit! D:"

This was actually what made me fall in love with the game. It reminded me on the good, old, WoW-days.. when there were mostly people who tried to connect to others, and who tried to progress together. WoW did not have this since Cataclysm anymore and it made me bitter very often when I played WoW and thought of it.. when I thought of this new single player MMORPG with almost nothing but toxic rants in chat occasionally.

I tried FFXIV out of boredom, I sticked with it due to it's community. I haven't played another game in the last like 10 years where it was so easy to connect to other players.. This game gave me the thing I was missing for years in literally all other online games. I'm not a toxic person, but toxic reactions are usually almost all I get in most online games these days. FFXIV is the one game where I honestly did not notice a single instance of toxic behaviour during my first 6 months of playing. Instead I met a lot of cool people over this game, some of them even in real life after a while.

Long story short: I think Captain Grimm really captured the transition from WoW to FFXIV well there. I am literally all those characters he showed there, except the one who skiled cutscenes. I never skip cutscenes :D SWTOR players hated me for this btw!

I must have had extraordinary luck in WoW, because these dungeon stories/attitudes have always been in the minority for me. I can count on one hand the WoW dungeon groups that were actually awful. I can also count on one hand the WoW dungeon groups that were amazing. The majority of my runs are just "Okay, we know why we're here, let's just get it done and move on." aka neutral experiences (which, so far, is also how most of my FFXIV dungeon experiences have been: neutral and minimal chatter.)

Having a job to do in any MMO sounds like the relationship you are trying to cultivate in the game. If WoW’s environment is producing such steep competition in terms of who is stronger and why, then you have to take a step back and re-evaluate what is going on at the root. Is it the damage meters making you crazy? What is so appealing about going after the carrot when I’m not even a horse? You can’t put a saddle on my back and ride me like one, and if you tried to force me, I will accuse you of rape and/or castrate the man myself for attempting to force me into such a position.

We went through the dungeon and I did my best to pull just the right amount of mobs, and do all the tanky jobs. When it was done I got compliments from the entire group. It was amazing! I don't think I've ever seen a group in WoW say "Great Tank!" before.

I was in shock. Every task that involved randos, easy, friendly, we got it done and I only ever had to matchmake once. It was great. Then I took a break. I continued to play in 2020, at my worst time. A solid 2-3 year break from the game. Should've never left. It's good fun.

When I cause a wipe on WoW i just say "my b" and I never get yelled at. I think owning that you caused the wipe instead of being silent about it impacts how the players respond to it. When I did experience getting called out for things years and years ago, I tensed up and braced for the reaction, but honestly being criticized even in a fashion where it got blown out of proportion made me a better player because I wanted to be good and bettered myself instead of taking it to heart. Not everyone takes it that way and I get that it causes problems for people, sometimes people stick up for you and in my overall experience I just ended up getting better at the game because of the harshness and stood up for people who were being attacked in groups. I don't come across that level of toxicity anymore these days. It turned me into a better player and one that stood up for others who experienced brutal remarks and offer my help instead of joining in on it so I didn't become their next target. I don't care if I get targeted for sticking up for someone else and turn it into an instance problem instead of someone being singled out. But that hasn't been the case for me in a long time and it's unfortunate that people still experience that type of behavior. I don't experience talkative, friendly, supportive groups in dungeons on FFXIV since doing dungeons under level 70. Just my experience.
