Never felt like the SG ever hit a plateau in terms of its awesomeness.
The standard Gibson model has always been a solid guitar.

Love these reviews - suggestion to consider re-doing your rating system. Since everything seems to be 7.5-10 its hard to really understand what you think vs. others as a comparison

What kind of pots are they? Analog? My 05 SG faded drives me nuts. I want to roll back the volume and it doesn’t do anything until 3-1 and its a quick shut off.

The SG is the only guitar I have multiple of in my small collection. Mostly from the Gibson Mod shop... but all types. I just wish Gibson's quality control was better. It's sad when I can get an Epiphone SG for 1/3-1/4 the price and it has a far far better fit and finish. Yeah, Gibson pickups are better than those from Epiphone but swapping them out is easy and STILL keeps the guitar under the price of the Gibson. It's amazing we pay 1800 bucks for these, and the Epiphone SG is $499. And yeah, the neck is finished better, the body is finished better than the Gibson.

For the life of me I still cannot figure out why Gibson STILL isn't using jumbo stainless steel frets or locking tuners. Especially for the price. If you honestly think the wood quality and type in the Gibson SG gives better tones... mmmm ok.

I believe the tribute also has different tuners. Anyone know if the tribute STAYS in tune? That's my only concern when considering the tribute vs the standard.

I have one and it's pretty damn good. I always play Les Paul's but lately I've been digging the SG. The only thing I didn't like is for the price you get shitty bag. It should have been a hardshell case! My Les Paul 2003 Deluxe Studio came with a hardshell case.

So where's the $400 + difference between the the $1,300 standard tribute Sg and the Standard Sg? Both have the same Nut both have the same Nashville bridge both have the same electronics and both have the same 490r and 490t humbuckers...so where is that ridiculous difference in the price come when both Models carry the exact same important hardware electronics and pickups

The top horn looks much stubbier and not as pointy as previous years, I’d deduct points for that aesthetically.

I decided to get the Special. I had a ‘90-something Junior with the P90, sold it, went through several guitars, and wanted that back. And the Special does exactly that, with a bonus neck pickup. For the humbucker sound I’ve got the Epi ‘61 Les Paul SG with the burstbuckers and…. Well, it does that, in spades, and at a great price.

I’ve never been big on the batwing. I don’t want to take off the bridge to tinker, and the small guard just gives the look more real estate. That’s just me, though.

I've had a lot of SG's since I started playing in 1969. Of course I regret letting some of them go. The last one I bought new in 2012 for $1299, including the brown hard case. Someone fell asleep with the sander in their hand, the neck was really thin, almost like the Ibanez Wizard neck! I like thicker ones, 58-59 LP type. I also hoard guitar parts, and I have a collection of custom pups. I almost bought a PRS 594 'S', and I have a set of (Maryland) 58/15 LT pups. But I really want an SG for work. I love the thicker neck, and I have a set of Duncan/Bonamasa PAF's MJ wound. I'll also change the wiring to 50's with top 10% parts, and some special oil caps I've saved. I may even route a small trench, and move the selector switch to the top horn, and make a cover for it. The weight is perfect, same as my hard tail Strat!! I have flight cases for transport. Thx!! 8) --gary

I've been wanting a Tribute for a long time. It has all the features I want in an SG.
There was a point in your jam where you looked like you were going for the vibrato, but maybe it was just the lower control knobs thing.
Nice one guys.

I think your review is spot on. Weird the standard is a step up from the special yet the special comes with a hard case and the standard doesn't... usually the higher priced model gets the hate case. I think the 490 and 498 pickups are just as good as any... they used those in cheaper Gibson models all the way to custom shop models. I have had those on several of my Gibson's... but I agree I prefer the 61's in the Gibson 61 reissue more... they really make the SG sing... and the pickguard on the 61 looks way better... I always thought the standard pickguard is ugly... but definitely a matter of taste. I own the 61 reissue. I may have bought a standard if I didn't get the 61 for peanuts... like $1,200 in mint condition with a hard case. I like it better than the standard but would have been fine with the standard too... other than having to look at the ugly pickguard...

I have three SG’s, one of them is a 19’ Standard and it’s an incredible axe. I purchased it a husk to avoid the max cost of a new one I’d just replace a few components anyhow. I wired in a set of Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Specials with an Emerson harness, Schaller tuners, then a Bigsby w/ a Schaller roller bridge and it’s probably my number one go to axe, love it.
The necks right in the middle too, it too thin nor too chunky. Just a pleasure to play 🤙

The SG is my ultimate favourite guitar!
I always stand while I’m playing, and it seems to melt into me, as i have it slung on a strap.
Also, i’ve never had an issue with neck-dive.

I'd really like to see a comparison with comparable Epiphones because of cost? Also I read that some SGs have slightly wider spaces between strings, which would be important to me and my chubby fingers. What models to look for?

I always prefer the look of the large guard . . . but I wouldn’t be mad if someone handed me a Gibson SG with a small guard, lol.

About the neck dive, I tend to think most of the people complaining tend to keep their guitar low slung and/or have a strap with slippery material. A strap change and/or cinching the strap will fix that problem. You can also tie the strap above the headstock with a shoelace or small piece of leather like those who play acoustic guitar, uke, and other stringed instruments that don’t have a second strap button at the heel of the neck. Even when it does have a second, a lot of acoustic players prefer tying the strap up behind the nut because it just keeps a slippery instrument from moving around too much against one’s shirt and/or pants.

Not sure why more electric guitar players don’t use this method, but I can promise there would be zero neck dive. The headstock would stay in exactly the right position 100% of the time. 😉👍🏻

I owned an SG Standard for a bit, but I just couldn't gel with that neck And I like a fat 50s profile Obviously, a little different. My SG Special is much better for me, but I still want a '61 with the Burstbuckers and a hard shell case. Only $200 more Worth it!

I've always preferred the Standard over the 61 mainly because of the bigger neck joint. Just feels more secure without feeling bulky. Plus the back of the treble horn is beveled as to where the 61, Special, and TI are not.

The pickup heights sound a little off - the neck is much louder than bridge. My 2014 SG Standard is my main gigging guitar. Super lightweight, looks great, stays in tune, 57 classic pups with coil splits. It does it all!

I bought an unplayed Gibson SG Std Ltd Ed from an estate sale. The guy passed away before playing it. Even CAL hardshell Canadian made case which was still in a sealed bag. I took it home in the case for exactly $800.00 USD.
I found out that in 1974 Gibson released more or less this same guitar as a Ltd. Ed. to show off it's new 57 Classic PU's. In 1975 year it became standard in all SG Std. Evidently Gibson found a box of old t-top PU's and thought they would do Ltd. Ed of a ...Ltd Ed, LOL. The best I can find out is there were 30 made like mine. The original had an according bridge this does not and the Grovers on this one are locking. The color on both is a vintage sunburst. A kind of medium brown stain that gets very dark on the perimeter.
it virtually has no neck dive. It feels very light but I do not have a scale. I bought it to flip as I am a pensioner and I buy and flip estate sale musical instruments. Usually a nice old Dano is all I find. Anyhow I plugged it into my old 50 watt Plexi and hit a couple of chords. Instant ....WTF!!!! It sounds like decades old recordings I have ...so close you would swear they had my guitar. I flipped my old PRS instead. It is my go to!!!

In the middle position Blending the neck pickup down to about 7 and bridge on 10 is perfect for biting rhythm and flipping to bridge for solos.
