That's why i love Japan so much.
I was invited to a party at the house of a member of the imperial family.
The house was so beautiful but also so unostentatious and there was nobody trying to overpower others with the way they dress, on the contrary they all dressed in the most demure and understated way. There was no musicians in the corner, nobody was spotting extravagant jewellery and accessories. The shoes were left at the door so nobody had any expensive footwear to show off. The house was decorated with very few objects, just an antique trinket here and there and fresh flowers wonderfully arranged in bamboo or bronze vases. Of course i knew this house cost hundreds of million on the market and that those vases and trinkets were one of a kind masterpieces worth millions, but there was no ostentation, and it would have been impossible to tell our host were so rich or so important if i had met them on the street, hadn't i known who they were.
Japan is the only country where the richer you get the more banal you look. I love that.
I rented a house in a nice area but my rent was very cheap, (because my mother in law knew the owner) and every day i would see this old woman sweeping in front of her house and sprinkling water, and tending to her garden with her old husband who would wash and clean his car on weekend and magnificently shaped the collection of Bonsai he owned.
I watched them do the same routine for years, often meeting them at the local supermarket or on the streets greeting each other kindly, until i found out that he was the former mayor and governor of Tokyo and was a multi billionaire. His house was beautiful but simple, he cleaned and washed his car and garden, went to do his shopping as his wife did when she wasn't sweeping the ground in front of her house.
I imagined for a second the former mayor of New York or governor of California doing this with his wife and it made me laugh.
This is so unique to Japan and so beautiful.

Never easy the big meeting of the parents. Let me say how proud I am of Michelle. What a beautiful brilliant lady. I'm Black American and it's wonderful seeing Asians in positive roles. Helps all ethnicities to see this.

The movie was not crazy or rich enough compared to the book. In the book, it was ridiculous. They had their pet fishes undergo plastic surgery, they rode private jets that look like Balinese spas inside, etc. Here, they just looked like regular American rich.

When are we getting the 2nd movie 😢

The most heart warming is to actually have a friend with a walk-in closet of gowns. Even more so she will dress her up without asking. I mean how many of you actually know someone with so many gowns.

I got married at this site over 10 years ago. It's such a shame that it's since been closed and is in very bad shape. The government is corrupt and all they see is how profitable it will be to sell the land rather than maintain it as a heritage site.
