C´mon. Hikaru is a genius. Even if he doesn´t want to admit it, he is.

I'm not trying to say that Hikaru or chess GMs don't have outstanding memory or anything, but this really isn't as impressive as a lot in the comments seem to (understandably) think. I spend a lot of time on this website and was originally horrible at the chimp test, but as soon as I tried a strategy like Hikaru did here I got into the mid-20s and then just stopped because it's really not fun at that point and just becomes very hard work. The thing is, when you chunk the squares or convert them to something less abstract than just their visual position, you actually use much less of your memory skills. So, people watching only see 30 squares, but he is employing a strategy that makes it more simple than just remembering 30 things.

I've always wanted to see Hikaru get into speedcubing because of his fast pattern recognition with puzzles and stuff, and after seeing this, I can imagine him challenging the Multi Blind world record of solving 62 Rubik's cubes blindfolded.

I'm at 98.69%.... don't even wanna try and beat it. I would spend between 4-7 minutes figuring out a pattern in my head to remember and once I got to 25 I just was mentally tired of trying to think of ways to group the number that I ended up throwing away 2 lives just rushing through my thought process. I couldn't image going past that point.

I tried this test and there's nothing that actually requires skill, you just take more and more time as you progress through stages but you can't really get it wrong past a stage. I'm not over average yet I was able to go to stage 27 on my first try.

Guys, guys! It's about practicing, not about individual abilities (memory)... There are memorization techniques out there, you know. Hikaru for example used algebraic notation (the way you identify the squares on a chess board) to memorize the sequence, in which he is very experienced. It's all about practice, not talent, like most things in life. Come on you guys.

I have a bad base memory. If you and me talked today for 2 minutes i would not remember your face or name 2 days later. Yet i can memorize over 104 playing cards in any order. There are tricks to memorizing things and everyone can do it with practise. Hikaru is doing his version of a memory palace playing out as a chess game. I bet most people could get into 100th percentile with a llittle practise.
