One other problem with scoped storage is that it is you can't see your data any more. On old versions of Android you could see everything. You can't really change all of it without root but you can see all of it. I know google did it for security reasons but I have a feeling that was just their excuse for annoying us with scoped storage.

In hindsight, I'm glad I bought a Chromecast 4K!

I only touch Google TV sticks now. Everything ends up running like crap and I recently ditched my Amazon 4k sticks for this reason. What is nice, and what most don't tell you, in the Google TV you can run it in app only mode so you don't get all the crap on your homescreen. Done!

I’m really interested to know why you went so much out of your way to not talk about Apple TV. Is it really just the audience? I find it weird that LTT does builds all the time using thousands of dollars of hardware, yet couldn’t include a $130 streaming device that emphasizes user experience, has zero ads, and regularly gets updates for years after its released. I watch all kinds of pirated stuff on my Apple TV. You don’t have to buy anything from Apple to use it.

So can I make a pc/laptop streaming setup and stream 4K HDR videos without dealing with my smart tv and all those streaming devices he mention.

I'd say just get a shield, but nvidia seems hell bent on not giving it a hardware refresh.

I tried using a USB hub to use Ethernet instead of the Chromecast's WiFi, but if it worked I couldn't tell. Maybe there's a necessary settings change I don't know of. Another caveat with moving apps to external storage is the developer has to allow it. I wanted to move most of my apps to the extra storage, but most aren't able to be moved. Not fun when you need to download an update and you don't have enough space. I've also needed to restart the Chromecast again after it updates for it to recognize the external storage. Not a big deal but it shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise I highly recommend the Chromecast. There was a new version leaked a couple months ago, but no word on it since then. Other than more storage, better WiFi, and maybe a better CPU I'm not sure what the new model could offer.

I use an old Chromecast (1080p) without a remote control. You could get one used in our region for around 5$ and I find it much easier to search for things on a smartphone. I use a special iOS app for pirating (it’s a browser app that can cast all video‘s) and every other app with a subcription has the cast button. It's worked for me for years. The only reason to switch at some point would probably be a new TV.

Those chromecasts can be buggy at times. At least you probably want to update them.

I have nothing but old Plasma TV's on my home. I just toss a Roku on the TVs and the work just like any smart TV. One TV is from 2006. You wanna talk about saving money, haha. 1080p is fiiine.

One reason I like having a box is for travel. Many hotels don't have streaming devices, so I can use mine. Also, even if they have one I like that I don't have to log in. I can just use my already logged in one. It's a lot more convenient.

so what's a good travel option for watching files off usb drive? currently using a roku ultra i had laying around (after replacing it with the incredibly far superior shield pro '19) the gtv 4k has that file size limit which means pretty much no 4k movie playback (4.4g file limitation)

The best device for streaming imo would be a dongle and to fully remove the smart functionality from the tv itself. I want a tv to see a show or play a game, not deal with bloat ware.
