Routers and Default Gateways

A router is a device that passes data between one or more local area networks (LANs).

A gateway is a device or node that connects disparate networks by translating communications from one protocol to another.

My teacher is asking me "Do you need a gateway if you have a router?" can someone please help me with this question

No MAC addresses within each network?

Default Gateway is basically what lets you connect to something outside your broadcast domain (VLAN); in this case trying to connect to the internet or if Alice was trying to connect to Chandra (since Chandra is outside of Alice's domain).

So default gateway = your local router?
