Ukrainian Cossack kulish is a field millet porridge, which is often cooked outdoors in a cauldron over a fire. Tasty and incredibly filling, which is what you need for a good lunch.

Counting down the history of Cossack kulish began more than 500 years ago. These were tumultuous years, when peasants, the urban population, and the small nobility fled from the oppression of lords-tycoons and elders and settled on the undeveloped lands of the Dnieper region and the Pobuzh region. The condition of acceptance into the Cossack brotherhood was that men must be unmarried.

Therefore, they had to be able to prepare food in different conditions from what God sent, without special skills or an exact recipe. Kulish, similar to thick soup or liquid porridge, which could replace the entire dinner, became the main dish of the Cossacks.

Even in the 21st century, this dish is recognized as a masterpiece of national cuisine and is second only to Ukrainian borscht in its popularity. Today, according to Cossack traditions, kulish is cooked on fires during picnics, at summer cottages or in closed rooms using gas and electric stoves. A wonderful modern alternative to all these sources is a multicooker, which can diversify and add a special flavor to the everyday menu of every family.
