To be fair; Richards was stated to be the 'smartest man in the universe' not 'the most cunning' or 'the most ruthless.' A more cunning and ruthless person would have had black bolt destroy Wanda's puppet before she could even think, but in context, the actual woman who owned that body was an innocent pawn, Richards is not a ruthless murderer; and I think Wanda's quip towards shattering his family, probably made him more than a bit emotional.

I get a good laugh out of 'if Richards really was the smartest man' memes; but I don't think him not resorting to lethal force instantly wasn't out of character. It just sucks that the writers decided to use him and others as pawns to just get slaughtered to further establish Wanda's threat level. The real disservice here is what they did to Wanda and her brother though, so much potential, just to flush it all.
