As a Mercedes/DTM repair specialist, I approve of this list. However, there are certain jobs that will add back value to the car, like repairing the convertible top. Its expensive but if you can get the original parts at a good price, you can learn how to repair these things yourself. It seems scary and complicated because it's a mercedes and german cars are SO overengineered, but I guarantee you if you can work on your Acura or your Ford you can work on a Mercedes.

What about the CLK500?

Currently own an 07 350, the older engines suffered from premature balance shaft wear, which an campaign was opened for, basically a full rebuild, currently sitting at 230000 and still rolling strong

Thoughts on 03 to 06 e-class in e320 guise? Not many 500's in my area. Cheers

By in large a "reliable" Mercedes is probably still not as reliable as a unicorn Toyota that supposedly has 300,000 miles and going strong. But that's not what we're discussing here.
The topic is, Which Mercedes to buy/avoid. So the premise here is that we are comparing Mercedes to Mercedes.
Seeing all these comments about avoiding them all. Suit yourself. Since there are other options. But if I'm looking into buying a well kept low mileage classic from Mercedes, this video is tremendously informative.

Is there a time period where the GL550 is considered reliable? I was looking at getting a 2015 GL550 with 37k miles.

BMW cars have terrible reputation in terms of maintenance too.

I have a 2007 E550 sedan
(0-60 in under 5 seconds) other than tires once a year
and air suspension replacement. It still was a great purchase 8 years ago.

It's easy Mercedes from 2006 to this days are pretty bad, if you want a solid and reliable mercedes go from 2005 or older

Car Companies make a fortune from parts, my company charged Mercedes 75 dollars for a painted, assembled bumper. They charged 10 times that.

I love my 2005 E-Class W211 E350 Avant-Garde (the AG has lowered metal suspension and other tweaks)… I know about the balance shaft, SBC, 7-G tronic probs, deterioration of interior and rubber due to sun-damage and have paid for front-end probs, the intake manifold tumble flap, fuel tank replacement, GPS antenna failure (easy to work around) and other issues, including thermostat replacement and servicing 6-monthly… However, it is still a great, 200kW fun driver which looks superb in black after 18 years and has no rust :-). PS: have always serviced it 6-monthly though it only just reached 60,000 miles / 100,000 km.

I own a 2009 W204 C200 and I would say that it is the best C-Class if not the best modern Merc. The 2.1 diesel engines are quite bulletproof. The rear subframes are the only major problem area but the corrosion warranty for the US has recently been extended to 20 years so all such affected W204s will now be covered. The W220 S-Class is definitely not for anyone who doesn't do their own repairs.

$700 to have your SL500 top hydraulics rebuilt, and install them yourself. Very reliable car otherwise.

Dude I’ve been driving a W203 for 9 years. I put almost 80K on that and still running like a champ! It’s cheap and an economic car.
