Model Y prices are now under 40k after $7500 tax rebate making it one of the most affordable new vehicles on the market.

Can you do an updated video on this? My model Y drain battery like crazy. It was 250miles at 80% full charge. I havent touched the car in 3 days and now its sitting at 180 miles. The cost of gas and electricity is different too. Gas is around $3.7-$4 in my area and electricity cost keep rising, it is now .48cent kwh during off peak hrs. I bought my model Y long range around $65k otd and its only worth $31k now..

How about 10 years and 15 years cost? RAV4 can survive after 15 years with a very reasonable cost.
range will be still around 350-400 miles. How about model y? I hope u can get half range as rav4

Hertz rental cars is selling off 20,000 Teslas now. You may want to research why before you buy a Tesla.

BUYER BEWARE WHEN BUYING A TESLA new or used. Remember that during Covid the gas prices skyrocketed and Tesla superchargers were much cheaper. However now that has reversed and the price of gas in about 50% less and the Supercharger prices doubled so now it costs more to drive a Tesla than and ICE. Also the insurance prices for Teslas has skyrocketed to about $8000 due to the sky high prices to repair even a fender bender on a Tesla due to the Gigacasting design everything is one piece so a fender bender repair cost is many times more than a fender bender on an ICE. Also now that people know how much it can cost to replace a battery like $70,000 the demand for used car market for used Teslas really decreased.

So I’m about to buy a regular RAV4. I will likely do over 20k miles a year. I think it is a better choice right now than either of these. why?
Model Y battery very expensive to replace, supercharger cost is more and fries the battery quicker. Very expensive to replace
RAV4 HYBRID cost more than regular one. That cost plus the possibility of hybrid system and/or battery failure when out of warranty would blow away and savings. I know these systems have longer warranties but if you plan to drive past warranty time the regular RAV4 is better choice.

I drove a model Y. Amazing! I want one, but for now if you have to drive a lot and want to keep for long term get RAV4 regular. Low miles yearly or like getting a newer vehicle every 2 years go with Model Y and charge at home. Tech will get better so in a few years the Tesla will be a better choice for sure.

Given the current state of public charging infrastructure, my preference for a new car is: PHEV, then Tesla, then regular hybrid, then other electric car, and last any plain ICE car.

Also, the last time I use a DC fast charger, the cost was about $0.48/kWh, which is double what I pay at home.

If it is not an EV then it is an unconscionable compromise. Do you not care about climate change, do you not think you have any responsibility? More than that, hybrids have duplicate power trains, stupid small batteries, unnecessary complexity that is going to be a problem in the future, why think that is OK!!!!!

Over next year's you have to return that money to IRS.
I got $8000 tax credit buying mo home back in 2009 , still paying this credit back to IRS every year when doing my tax .

Hello / You should have included in your calculations the time spent by the owner of the Toyota RAV 4 during maintenance (you go to the TOYOTA workshop every time and spend quite a lot of time on this - this time could be spent on making money) With Tesla you do not have to do maintenance you're wasting time
I have a Toyta and for 3 years I have spent quite a lot of hours on maintenance and during this time I could have earned quite good money / For some reason no one takes this into account!🙂

At my Mammoth condo electricity is 40c/kWh. That means that in the snow and ice, the fuel costs of a RAV4 and Model Y are similar. Throw in that installing a 240V 40A power line will cost $2,000 and I will have to get home owners insurance with a $1,000,000 cap at $900/year, that adds $9,200 over 8 years after which the Model Y drive train warranty will expire making the car almost worthless, whereas a RAV4 will go on running without much extra cost for years.

Thank you for the analysis. While I’m a big proponent of EVs in general, I don’t understand why such analysis only considers the basic cost of electricity per kWh when there are other electricity fees to be considered. For example, in my area, the basic service supply rate is $0.33/kWh, but that does not include the other fees, which total about $0.15/kWh. So, our effective electricity rate is $0.48/kWh. I’m sure many other states also have various fees that contribute to the per kWh rate. Therefore, you cannot only consider the cost of the basic service supply rate. What’s your thought about this?

My wife drives a modelY, i drive a Rav4 hybrid. Model Y is more fun to drive compared to the Rav4 and also electric is a bit cheaper than gas. Model Y interior also looks cleaner. Rav4 feels pretty basic.
There’s one thing thaf i HATE about the Model Y, its the ride, its super bumpy. I wish it had air suspensions like the model S/X. Also range anxiety is a real thing esp when you go on roadtrips

The problem with this video is stealerships never sell cars at msrp, so the RAV4 you showed would more likely be in the mid 40's nearly on par with the cheapest model y (currently). In addition, the tesla cost of ownership will remain mostly the same AFTER those 5 years and there a hundreds of teslas with 250k mi with single digit battery degradation. On the flip side, the RAV4 after 5 years will start to ramp up in expenses like most ICE cars. So the true cost of ownership over a 5-10 year span is much different and the model y would be a clear winner.

haha! Not only is 5 year ownership HIGHER for the MY, look at what happened since this video came out. The resale values PLUMMETED and yet someone with a Rav4 Hybrid is enjoying the same reliable Toyota value retention. So update this now and see how much of a bath you’d be taking with the MY.

Lastly, I would not call a Tesla “Premium” vs Toyota. There is no comparison on build quality. The Tesla is built like shit and has nothing going for it in terms of luxury. Just a screen and buggy software.

I love the idea of the EV, it would fit our lifestyle perfectly.....I don't have a "money tree" so the price still needs to come down a little more, because its not the 5 yr costs thats a concern, its the 6-10 + yr costs that we should be discussing. I live in Vancouver BC and insurance costs for a model 3 basic are $1000 more per yr over a Rav4 XLE Hybrid. My concerns are what are the maintenance costs for a Tesla going to be after the warranty period runs out. Yrs 4 - 10. What if the battery dies or issues with the info screen? These items run into the thousands of $ to replace whereas a Rav4's replacements parts costs are much lower. Thanks for the all your hard work putting together this video.
