The Keep Your Distance ability can also be used before the first action, which means that if they were in close combat, they can disengage for free, and get 3” away to use their guns, which do most of the time more damage, than their melee weapon. A free “move away into shooting range” is definitely useful before blasting at the enemy for 2 actions. They are really Keeping Their Distance ;-)
