Question, when you were cleaning up the second face I noticed the center hole was not centered. Was the front and back (top and bottom) still coplanar? Answer I think is the sides just aren’t equal?

I think I’ve said it before but I have a full size Nova wood lathe. It cracks me up every time I see you change something in the tail stock! It is so big! (I know, that’s what she said.) I am used to #2 taper. It’s just different to what I am used to.

Nothing new, that is what's going on for years.

question: why did you use a center drill to located the tapped holes, but not for the dowel? I would think its location would be even more important? What am I missing?

I learn a word every day. Today I learned a dandy. "Swarf" the debris or waste resulting from machining, woodworking, or similar subtractive, material-removing, manufacturing processes. Swarf can be small particles (such as the gritty swarf from grinding metal or the sawdust from sawing or sanding wood); long, stringy tendrils (such as the springy chips from turning tough metals, or long shavings from whittling); slag-like waste (such as is produced within pipe during pipefitting work); or stone fragments and dust (as in masonry). Metal chips can be extremely sharp and they can cause serious injuries if not handled correctly.

Excellent part! Sooooooo many extra tool change operations though. Make better use of the DRO!

Center drill all bolt holes, change tool, pre drill holes, change tool, chamfer all holes, change tool, tap all holes. Done. Saves an hour of work.

I know about taking it easy doing heavy cuts on auto-feed. Charlie (my boss) had put a block of steel on the bed of the Cincinnati horizontal mill, put the cutter in the adapter, and fit it into the spindle. The block was clamped down, the spindle speed and feed selected. He turned it on and watched for a couple of minutes then we went back to his office to discuss another job. A few minutes later we heard GRRUNK!... BANG!!! ... CLUNKITY, CLUNKITY, CLUNKITY... And Charlie was out of his chair and making a mad dash to the machine floor where he hit the E-stop. Upon examination he found the cutter shank had broken and cracked the adapter. It was Saturday and the supplier was closed so nothing more happened on that job until the next week.
Yeah, mate, take it slow and easy on a heavy cut like that. There was a pile of odds and ends of bar stock at the end of the shop and we figured that was where the cutter came to rest, but we never did find it.

I was a bit confused when you did the first face off in the lathe and drilled the centre hole. The you flipped the work piece in the lathe and pushed it up to the chuck face but the centre hole wasn't running true? . In my limited lathe skills that would worry me, suggesting the centre hole wasn't square to the first face. What am I missing?.

Curious, why sand off the oxidation, if you're going to mill off 5mm from each surface?
