The maritime republics were some Italian port cities which, starting from the Middle Ages, enjoyed political autonomy and economic prosperity thanks to their maritime activities.
This definition, born in the nineteenth century, is generally referred to four Italian cities, whose coats of arms have been shown since 1947 in the flags of the Italian Navy and Merchant Navy:
Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice.
However, in addition to the four best known, Ancona, Gaeta, Noli and, in Dalmatia, Ragusa are also considered maritime republics; at certain historical moments they had no secondary importance compared to some of the more well-known ones.
Uniformly scattered along the Italian peninsula, in the North, in the Center and in the South, the maritime republics were important not only for the history of navigation and trade: in addition to precious goods otherwise unavailable in Europe, new artistic ideas and news about distant countries.
Over the centuries, the maritime republics, both the best known and the least known but not less and less important, experienced fluctuating fortunes, which brought to light now one, now the other city. In the 9th and 10th centuries, this phenomenon began with Amalfi and Gaeta, which soon reached their period of maximum splendor. Meanwhile Venice began its gradual rise, while the other cities were still experiencing the long gestation that would lead them to autonomy and to follow up on their maritime vocation. After the 11th century, Amalfi and Gaeta declined rapidly, while Genoa and Venice became the most powerful republics, followed by Pisa, which experienced its most prosperous moment in the 13th century, and Ancona and Ragusa, allied to resist Venetian power.
After the fourteenth century, while Pisa declined until it lost its freedom, Venice and Genoa continued to dominate navigation, followed by Ragusa and Ancona, which experienced their golden moment in the fifteenth century. In the sixteenth century, with the loss of autonomy of Ancona, only the republics of Venice, Genoa and Ragusa remained, which still experienced moments of great splendor until the middle of the seventeenth century, followed by more than a century of slow and golden decline that ended with the Napoleonic invasion.
