I just set this up on an iMac, but have run into an issue where I’m not able to type from the keyboard however I can press the escape key to exit out of Luna display. The only way the keyboard seems to start working again is if I reboot the iMac and then it starts working on the Mac mini. Have you come across anything like this?

This is handy as I have m2 Mac mini with Viewfinity S9 5k as main monitor. On same desk I have 2019 27”iMac. Bear in mind that with Luna display the max resolution on the 5k iMac is 2k 2560x1440. Handy but not 2 5k displays.

Thanks Lamar - great video!. Just one question: is there a way to set up Luna Display without needing a second monitor - just the old iMac? I've just bought a Mac Mini M2, and I can't get it to work with a couple of older monitors (Dell and Acer) that don't have HDMI ports. I've tried using a VGA to HDMI adapter, but nothing happens. Do I have to obtain a second monitor just to set up the iMac as my only display, and then I can use the iMac as my only monitor? Or would I be better off getting a different adapter to connect the Acer or Dell, and forget about the iMac? The older monitors seem to have DisplayPort ports - maybe a DisplayPort to HDMI or Thunderbolt adapter would work? Many thanks for any advice!

I have a 2015 Intel iMac. I am planning to buy a mac mini and would like to use the iMac as a display. I take it you will need a separate monitor for initially installing luna onto the mac mini? After that are you able to use iMac as the only display? How does the start up procedure look like? Do you turn on the iMac first and then turn on the mac mini? Does the mac mini automatically then show the screen on the iMac?

Great and much useful video from others. Great to know use the Ethernet cable to connect from Mac Mini, it empties a Type-C connector that Mac Mini only have two. Thank you for the information and a real how-to that made others bluff.

From what I just read, Luna Display is NOT good for gaming. So if I wanted to buy an M series Mac and wanted to connect my 27" intel iMac as my main display, Luna Display would NOT be good for gaming such as Baldur's Gate 3 or 7 Days To Die (my two favorite games). Big frown! :(

can you use a Mac mini with only a 2017 5K iMac as the monitor? My imac wifi is via dongle only

I connected my 2016 MacBook Pro (USB-C) via ethernet cable via dongle directly to my 2014 iMac (which does not have USB-C but has ethernet) and even with a direct wired ethernet connection I found the connection somewhat laggy. When I move the mouse it's not super smooth, and video definitely is a no-no (can maybe get 1080p video to run barely, but I can't imagine 4K). Would Thunderbolt 2 cables with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter be better or not necessarily? Is there a way to have streaming video from the source computer playback smoothly on the second screen? My ideal use case scenario would be to buy a new M3 Mac Mini and use it in headless mode to my 27 inch 5K iMac. Do you know if streaming films in 4K would be possible via this setup?

Hey Lamar, great video, but I am not clear on one thing. I want to use my 2013 iMac as the main (and only) display for a new M2 Mac Mini. I know I need another monitor of some type to initially set it up, but do I also need separate mouse and keyboard? I was hoping to use the mouse and keyboard from the iMac for the Mac Miini and not have to buy additional ones.

What are the workarounds if you also need Ethernet for internet access? I don't want to use WiFi. Would I need to use an Ethernet-to-USB or Ethernet-to-Thunderbolt adapter on the Mac Mini (or an Ethernet dock with multiple ports) to add a secondary Ethernet port for internet access while using Luna Display over the primary Ethernet connection?
