Epson engineers had three design goals for the SurePress L-6534 digital label UV printing press:
1. Reliable enough to print labels 22 hours/day 7 days/week
2. Consistent digital print quality even after a year of continuous use
3. Cost-effective, automatic operation that minimizes labor and consumables

Epson also identified four key trouble spots to overcome in a digital press:
1. Fine registration control – for readable text as small as 2-point
2. High opacity white ink – applied with other inks in one pass, with one print head, and no need to condition the ink
3. No color shifts, no calibration for repeat jobs
4. Widest possible color gamut with the fewest ink colors

Print volume

According to consultant I.T. Strategies, commercial printers serving the packaging industry require label presses to print an average of 350,000 square feet/month.

In theory, digital label presses in the $500,000 price range should do that in just one shift, but many fall short.

The Epson L-6534 digital print press is capable of five times the requirement, or 1.75 million sq feet/month, with very consistent speed, reliability, quality and operational ease via a highly automated, high quality process with minimal mechanical adjustments:

• Preservation of fine detail in small text, achieved with LED UV pinning lamps in very close proximity to the print heads to prevent droplets from moving or spreading
• Static on film, minimized with electronic ionizer bars
• Certain film surfaces not quite ready to receive UV ink, solved with corona treating devices
• Web breaks, minimized with automatic monitoring of web tension and an optical splice detector
• A lack of operator training, solved with Epson training on site
