I find teaching word family's at this stage is also helpful.

Than Consternate diaframs and blends along with phonics.

If I start wit the last few words and than move to the first few words and then have hee blend it helps

I did two letter words and moved on to 3 and than 4 and than more. I use the Bob books and word family flash cards to help.

we can make are kids reading are way we like

But the research shows that kids with learning disabilities sometimes cannot make the connection of sound to symbol first. So, with them, teach a few sight words, then pair it with phonics as you continue to add new sight words. I did this with my grandson who couldn't read anything in 3rd grade using phonics first. Now he reads on grade level in high school and can use phoncs and sight words.
