How the 90s VHS look works

I had way too much fun adding the filters to this one.

what people now don't know is that tape degraded. so the bad quality took hold over time. vhs tapes new out of the box were actually quite crisp and clear, for the resolution.

Grew up with VHS, somehow some of the tapes I had of steamboat willy got edited and the suspenders were removed

My Dad got so much use out of his USB VHS machines. He was finally able to back up all of his old tapes on to one hard drive, and now he's bugging relatives to see if they've also got tapes that they want digitising.

I have noticed that a lot of teh youthz these days will smack that VHS filter over just any video for the aesthetics of it. Having lived through the VHS era, I don't remember it looking that bad. That filter reproduces rather severe failure states; it's what a worn out tape in a clapped out machine looks like. It's not how us 90's kids watched Back to the Future and Star Wars: A New Hope on.

Simple solution: use a vcr

I always laugh at TV shows that simulate video playback on a TV and the word "PLAY" and the battery meter appear. Those are usually only visible in the camera view piece (or mini on-cam monitor) and possibly for a scant few seconds on a TV when a video starts, but almost never for the whole viewing. Unless you accidentally changed a setting and can't figure out how to turn it back off, but then your clock probably still says 12:00 AM...
