1917 won the DGA award for Best Director in 2019, but "Joker" and "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" were better movies.

I thought it was a pretty shit movie, the cinematography was excellent, but the story and script was terrible, only redeemed by the 'based on a true story'

You know how 1917 isnt a good movie the only thing people talk about it for are its technical achievements. Not its story, not its characters, not its themes, all it has is its long cuts.

Rope is so much more difficult from a storytelling, acting, and blocking perspective.

Also Maher is such a kissup blowhard that this was borderline unbearable.

I know people in Hollywood don't give a fuck about history, or reality in some cases, but anyways, there were hundreds of thousands of Blacks and Africans who served during WWI, several hundred thousand were combatants in Europe.
I'm kind of surprised Quentin did not know that. The lack of knowledge Bill demonstrates never surprises me though. For more than 20 years Bill has been told what to believe and think. Though recently he has claimed some of his views have changed, I haven't seen him genuinely apologize to any of his previous guests who he has mocked and talked down to.

I really hate this line of thinking. Just because you made something that is difficult to make (long cuts in our case) DOESN'T mean that it's automatically good. There has to be a point to do something like that, like the perfect example Tarantino mentioned with Hitchcock, where the one cut MATTERS. Hitchcock didn't make a movie with long cuts just for the sake of it. 1917 on the other hand did that as a marketing trick. There was no purpose for the long cuts. They did it for the sake of doing it. That has no value in my opinion. 1917 would have been exactly the same if they didn't have long cuts. Same story, same characters, same drama, same action. The long cuts serve no purpose other than to trick the average movie viewer into thinking the movie is special.

The hell they are talking abot cuts. The film just manages to create an atmosphere like you are with the main character and it has an insane climax. The whole "no cuts" stuff just lets you feel the intesity of the whole story + the feelings of the main character. It's just brilliant story telling. Who dafuq gives a shit how much cuts he made.

More than 380,000 African-Americans,12,000 Native Americans, and 200,000 Hispanic Americans served in the Army during World War I, 18 percent of the military at that time was foreign born, so plenty of chances for diversity in that conflict. I realize 1917 was about two British soldiers and that's a fair point, but they laughed at the notion that there was diversity in that war as if it was obvious there was none, which isn't actually true.

Tarantino does have a point, many movies lately really tend to take shortcuts or do such minimal effort to justify its existent. Every comedy movie is so safe its hard to get any real reaction if its not done by people who have been in comedy for a long time. Horror movies rely on cheap jump scares and paper thin character development. The only movies that can really kill it anymore are action and animated.

Bill's too high or he doesn't know his history. Britain, France, and Germany were colonial powers who conscripted subjects from all over the world. There was millions of people of from india, africa, and the west indies who fought in WWI.
