The Americans fuq’d themselves by not allowing an entire contingent of their force to participate where they could’ve been effectively used.

Fun fact: all the actors had to undergo boot camp and tough training for their rolls. Except Matt Damon. Matt Damon didn't even have to be on set for MOST of the shooting. So the resentment they had for private ryan was slightly real resentment for Matt Damon. Lol

Please rewatch this in the proper way.

It's almost disrespectful to not view this in it's best way possible.

It is quite possibly the best cinematic and engrossing war film ever made.

Everybody mistakes Steamboat Willie for the stabby guy. But anyway Upham's "redemption" scene always gets me. He thought he was right earlier, then he thought he was wrong toward the end, so he tries to right the wrong in the wrongest way, but that last ambiguous right/wrong decision will stick with him for the rest of his life. Hardest part of the movie for me.

The opening scene Ryan goes to the grave of his brother, at the end he's at the grave of Capt. Miller's grave. His family is directly behind him at the first grave site, at the end, his family remains at a respectful distance, except for his wife who has no idea who Miller is. Ryan went home and never told anyone about that day in Ramell.

If you've been to Omaha Beach, then you'll know just how absurd history really is. What was once a graveyard with thousands of corpses where blood would spill on almost every grain of sand is now one of the most peaceful places I've ever been to. The craters on the ground where hundreds of Americans got their arms and legs blown off are filled with local flora that children love to climb out of, the bunkers where German soldiers slept with Jewish blood on their hands look like the kind of place one would be able to live if a zombie apocalypse broke out, and the beaches where millions of bullets were fired into the ground look so untouched that you could imagine the last form of life setting foot on those sands could've been a dinosaur.

A lot of those "men" who stormed that beach, those who lived AND died witnessed horrors they've never conceived before. They were mostly boys really. Supposed to be 18 but a lot of people lied ab age to "do their part" a lot of people can barely comprehend what it must've been like to be there

I think the camera focuses on Upham so much because we are Upham. We're innocent and naive to the nature of war. We still have the luxury of thinking the obvious moral decision (letting that one soldier go) is the correct decision because we do not have to pay the cost of being wrong. This is why in the end Upham has to face the same man he showed mercy to and sees him fighting int he trenches again, Upham's mercy could be perceived as weakness, depending on your outlook, which signals to the audience "you think you know what is moral and right but you have not lived through war and weighed the cost between morality and the lives of your friends."

We do the same judging of cops when someone is killed. We behave as if we are qualified to judge, but they are in a constant state of anxiety and fear over losing their own lives and/or their mistakes costing the lives of their colleagues. It's easy to judge from our couches while watching the news under the safety provided to us by men like those portrayed in this film.

I get pretty sick to the stomach when I see or hear someone from France say something disparaging about Americans. Without the US and Britain fighting in France, and the Russians facing the bulk of the German army on the Eastern front, there is no France. French resistance would not have been able to repel Germany on its own. We are owed a debt from France, the least they can do is bite their tongues when they wanna be arrogant.
