In answer to your question about supper, since you ask. It is true that the word has become rare but it is not so much that the word itself is old fashioned as that the custom and way of life associated with it that has become old fashioned: people do not eat supper very much any more and that makes it old fashioned. Supper was the evening meal for the working class family and not very many people today regard themselves as working class any more and even if they do, they have to be living ina working class family to be enjoying supper. Supper takes places much earlier than dinner and never with alcohol, instead with tea milk or water. Supper around 5 or 6 pm Dinner is usually eaten after 7 pm and very often with alcohol. A class difference. Upper classes organized supper only for the childrens evening meal with nanny. The parents had dinner in the dining room, nanny and the children had supper in the nursery.

Dinner is a large meal. Usually in the evening but for example we might eat Thanksgiving dinner as early as 2 pm. It's a feast so it's still dinner.

Supper can imply a smaller evening meal. It's more common in rural southern areas. A farmer might have a big lunch and just a little soup for supper. Whereas an office worker will probably have a quick lunch out and a nice family dinner at home.

All of this is way too much nuance for an English class. That's why we say to use Dinner in most cases.
