Love this helpful video! Could you help me understand how wet masks (either from rain on the outside, or from condensation on the inside) change the filtering mechanisms? I've heard any wetness on the masks makes them completely ineffective, and has me worried about condensation inside the mask (esp if i am wearing them somewhere it is rather cold out, or in hot weather with sweat). Thanks!

Fast forward three years. Masking to prevent covid was useless and caused far more harm than good.

The point is, the mask was supposed to be used to block your breath exiting the mask. Not to protect you from incoming breath. Idiots.

Sure the smallest particles stick and the larger ones are stopped. It's the in-between that get through. Too many studies to count that masks are ineffective; and cause reduced oxygen and increased respiratory illness.

Dear Minutephysics, I see you have fallen on the BS surrounding "Brownian Motion" IF you'd have done further research you would realize that in a forced flow environment (IE breathing) Brownian motion does not occur, so small particles will get through - ALOT as per Swedish, French and German mask studies. Forced flow is also the reason CNB NATO respirator filters are only rated for several hours. If hot, moist expired air is able to pass in and out of filter material then you can bet the house, so is the virus. Oh, and and N95 isn't really a fine mesh compared to the virus. The holes are 24 times larger.

Anyone who has sanded drywall knows these N95 masks can't even keep those particles out. The filter may work, but a lot of air comes through the sides of the mask, as evidenced by the drywall dust pattern when you take the mask off. Then blow your nose and see how much of the dust got past your mask, and drywall dust is far, far larger and easier to filter out than a virus particle. Forget wearing any mask as a defense against the latest COVID manufactured threat because the virus infects you through your ears and eyes as well. You would require a full face breathing apparatus with an air supply. I didn't wear a stupid face diaper, nor did I get vaxxed and boosted and I didn't get any COVID. What I did do is keep my Vitamin D levels high, supplement with a couple of other things as well. I remained COVID and myocarditis free.

I know people who are convinced they have mold illness. I tell them an N95 will filter spores or mycotoxins in a building. They tell me it doesn't work. I say that's mental then.

Genius of the n95 mask is that it doesn't work especially to block viruses. New research shows but truly talk to anyone in construction works with dust they will tell you it makes its way in.
