I am from Bangkok and I could tell you that Bangkok have a lot of resemblance to Beijing. Both cities have a lot of really developed parts and both also have lots of shitty parts---small dirty alleys, dirty markets, cluttered old neighbourhoods. To put it simply, both cities have a lot of highly contrasting elements--rundown vs modern neighbourhoods, old temples vs ultramodern shopping malls, polluted busy streets vs. huge green parks. Both cities are also full of shitty drivers but overall Beijing is a much safer place than Bangkok but it is also more boring and a lot less tourist friendly.

Thank you for this nice time capsule. I live much further down, but on weekends I like to wander inside the upper sois too , just to see what's going on (usually somtam stalls and what not everywhere). And the Bangkok Admin really horrible at road repair.
