In Poland we've got a somehow similar legend about origins of Western Slavic nations.There were three brothers called Lech, Czech and Rus. After years living together they decided to separate so each one of them could have his own land. Rus went to the East and became the ancestor of Ruthenians („Rusini" in Polish, not to be mistaken with Russians!). Czech went to the South and became the ancestor of all the Czechs. Our ancestor, Lech, went to the West. His journey was long and tiresome. He went further and further to find the fitting place for his home. One day he got into this beautiful glade deep in the woods. In the centre of the glade there stood a beautiful, tall, old oak tree. Lech was walking for a long time but from the very beginning he realised that he and his people are not alone. There was this beautiful strong white eagle flying above him and his team. When they stayed the bird wouldn't sit down, when they slept the bird didn't sleep. The white eagle seemed to lead Lech and his people somwhere and they gladly followed their kind guide. So the day they came into the glade and saw that the white eagle finally sat down on the top of the oak. This was clearly the gods' given sign Lech was waiting for. He said "Here I'll stay. Here I will build my nest". As the bird that started building its own nest in the crown of that oak. Nest in Polish is "gniazdo". The very first capital of Poland was right there and its name was Gniezno (which is the version of "gniazdo")! The legend says the bird didn't die, he stayed there and still though from far away protects the people that he took under his protection long time ago. Thus in Polish coat of arms from the very beginning there is this white eagle, the symbol of our traditions.

Did you like the story? It's very old. Its variations are found in medieval chronicles, Czech people have their legend of two brothes only: Lech and Czech. But... Why in the legend there are no more Slavic nations mentioned? That's because in the legend Lech and Czech, or Lech, Czech and Rus in Polish version of the myth COME FROM THE SOUTH. Yes, it may sound funny, but our ancestors got it all wrong and instead of saying that we came from the Steppes of the East they believed we acctually come from Carantania, the fatherland of all the Slavs... And they thought that Carantania lied on the teritory where the modern day Croatia is. So, according to our very stragne tales and myths, the heroic journey of three brothes begins with leaving Southern Slavs behind in their original dwelling.

See that the legend says a lot about the roots of Polish coat of arms. This part of the story seems to reflect the pagan beliefs in some kind of augury. The term is taken from ancient Roman practice of interpreting omens from the birds behaviour, but it seems that many other tribes and nations did the same. It is also worth mention that both the eagle and the oak tree were considered emblems of god Perun.
