What is amazing about Heat is the soundtrack. It's very bold and takes risks.

Mann, Fincher and Nolan are the best in town, I don't see any other directors at their level.
My personal Mann Top 5 : 1- Miami Vice (Directors cut) / 2- The Insider / 3- Public Enemies / 4- Heat / 5- Manhunter.

I've never seen Mann and Herzog in the same room together. Coincidence? I think not

Heat 2 is a great book

even now...there's not a movie shoot out that has topped the one in Heat (the bank heist shoot out).
but, of course, that movie is much MUCH more than that one shoot out.
it's been a real influential to other filmmakers and the films they've been making after Heat, most famously Christopher Nolan and his sophomore Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
to put it in the simplest term..and thru the narrowest lens, Heat is to the crime genre as The Godfather is to the gangster genre.

Ferrari was boring

What a brilliant man! Absolutely adored every story he told. With such details, depth and focus. And questions was great too! Thanks a lot!

The visual imagination and flair in his films is incredible but maybe the most remarkable aspect of his films is the sound design. I think he might be the greatest sound designer from a conceptual standpoint in all of cinema today. This aspect of his work isn’t really touched on this otherwise excellent discussion but Ferrari, like other Mann movies, sounds amazing, and is worth the price of admission alone just in terms of how transportive and visceral it is — it sounds like you’re really at those tracks and inside of those cars.

One of the small handful of greatest living directors and one of the very few given the opportunity to work on such large canvases, ala a Kubrick or a Scorsese or (formerly) a Coppola.

He was a bit thrown by her accent, kind of cute

michael mann's work, made my life much more enriching

He's always detailed in his articulation, and this is reflected in the magnificent visuals in his movies. Even in Miami Vice (the t.v. series), he managed to bring this cinematic feel to every episode. He's a visual maestro and one of the greats.

Sounds like Heat 2 has a similar structure to godfather part 2, oscillating between a sequel and a prequel as he says himself.
