Obviously it’s not gonna work for everyone, I could see some folks finding it oddly restrictive if they hate outlines, but as a method of forcing you to sprint and commit, it sounds really sharp

the whole odd names is relatable. I do that all the time and I have to open them cause "wtf is this file doing here?" oh its my forgotten space novella i forgot about.

I also get being fickle with a commitment in a character. I worry that my own protagonist is just boring but i realized that it could be I haven't yet found how that character ticks and they are too vague in how they connect to theme. it just means you have to spend more time and ask questions of what motivates them, their internal conflict.

Congrats on figuring out what your challenge was and finding a tool that worked for you! When I'm mentoring other writers I always preface my advice with "These are the tools that work for me, maybe they'll work for you, try and see." Or sometimes "I don't do this but I have friends who swear by it, maybe this will fit your process."

You may find that as you bring more projects to the finish line, your process may change. That's ok! Some of the most successful writers I know say "I don't know how to write, I know how to write the project I'm working on right now."

Two last lessons I learned the hard way: one, I find that my writing towards the end of a book is a usually better than my writing at the beginning. That freaked me out until a friend pointed out that I'd just written 100k words, of course I'd improved along the way. And last but not least: as you go, you may find your ability to identify issues with something you've written may have outpaced your ability to fix them. This is pretty common (but like all things in writing, not universal!) and the solution is - well, if you said "Write more," enjoy the treat of your choice!

Best of luck with your book! May you find an easy path through the murky muddy middle to a satisfying ending. - John

I've read the snowflake method book and i really thought it would be perfect for me, but I could not get past the character profile step. I might try it again and then just skip this step hahaha

I identify so much with your commitment issues! I know this method, I'm going to try it soon.

The Snowflake Method was a game changer for me (former pantser). Some years back, I had left the author a bit of praise via his website after having read two of the Snowflake Method books (I referred to him as a rockstar for writers), and he wrote back with amusement about needing to relay his rockstar status to his wife. LOL

This seems like a really helpful method!!! I’m not at the point of writing a novel yet, but I wonder if a modified version of this could be applied to short stories as well and how that modification would work.

Hello, 👋
I really want to thank you for this video. I'm currently reading the Italian translation of the article in your description box. I've started writing almost three novels but haven't finished any of them, and I'm about to turn 33, so it sucks... but I'm still optimistic about the project. Thanks again. I'll come back to your video to finish it.
