He completely missed the story.

This reviewer almost deliberately missed the entire objective of the game. The guy would have given 9/10 for a cheap COD game.

People, I will say this once. The reviewer is out of his dumb mind and tried to sabotage/derail his own review by dragging Multiplayer in between his SP narration with story left for the end.

Bottom line is... If you pride yourself as a gamer who plays for the finer things such as Bioshock infinite, uncharted, tomb raider, heavy rain which rely on story, beautiful graphics and thought provoking events... then

Play this game. Seriously.

This guy is an idiot. The gameplay is meant to be deliberately generic as a comment on the current state of the modern military shooter and their "kill all the evil turist" themes. Whereas the slow-mo headshot mechanic is to give the player a rush, before dragging them back to the gritty reality of what they've just done.

 He has completely missed the point. He'd be much better off just being given a review copy of the most recent COD.

You know this is a bad review if they spelled review wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I get the praise for this game, but I think he brings up some good points too. The narrative of the game and the gameplay just don't match.  It would have been much more effective to have it like ARMA or the classic Rainbow 6 games where the mechanics also tell you that war is horrible. Then the guilt trips I think also would have been more effective if once again you actually did it, I think it makes it more effective with this medium.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I really wish you would've seen the Extra Credits episodes on this.

Gamespot regularly gives stagnant and creatively bankrupt COD releases 8-9/10 whereas a narratively complex and amazing game gets a 6.5/10. Shows you the integrity they have. Quality does not equal a good score. Money in their pockets does

Guys, why r we downvoting it again...

The game's story is fucking amazing. the shock it gives you, the character development and etc are on point... but people... IT'S NOT A 10/10... IS FAR FROM A 10/10. Spec Ops did what it was supposed to, to give a great story and let you be part of it and question things. but that's that... the gameplay is always the same. Hide and Cover. in terms of Story it's a 9. no doubt about it, but in terms of a game itself, it's a 6 at best.

i'll give you one thing, this review sounded hypocritical as fuck. "oh the story is cheesy"... like... you guys give 8 and 9s to Call of Duty and Battlefield and they are all the same thing. Badass male protagonists fighting for Amer...i mean... freedom, guns blazing, against Russians or Iraqis. and you call this story "cheesy". fuck off. i get the 6.5/10... but the rest... please...

"Other moments force you to look at the horrors you brought but these often feel cheap because you so rarely have a choice in your actions" And this shows the reviewer clearly didn't get it.

Of course you have a choice, the choice is to turn off the game and refuse to do it. That's the point. Some players may complain about the railroading at the white phosphorus incident, saying they only did it because the game made them. But then, the game didn't make them do anything. A player could have simply turned off the game, like how Walker could have turned around at that point, saying it's not worth it. But both the player and Walker did it because they were so dedicated to their goal that they had to rationalize the horrible things they did. Konrad even calls you out on this in the ending, saying Walker's/the player's insistence on continuing only made things worse, and he/you should have just turned around and left. "None of this would have happened if you'd just stopped."

This game is a deconstruction, or did the reviewer forget that?

I know this is years old, but if any of you think this is really as low as 6.5/10, you need to watch the Extra Credits video on it.

Deserves at least an 8. Don't believe me? Play the game.

Bought this on steam sale and just finished it..I will never trust critic reviews any more Period.This game is a must play!

Disliked it only because of the amateurish editing. The BGM choices and transition... dear me. Was it by an intern?

Seriously? The violence the main characters dish out and the intensity of their language directly reflects their psychological states, as they change throughout the story.
 
Granted the gameplay is pretty generic, the power of the game's story telling and the emotional response it elicits is a great strength.

Similarly, the lack of true choices, (even when they appear to be there) is an important element of the story about the horrors of war.

this game is damn good solid 8.5 if not a 9, forget the multiplayer but dayuuum that single player blew my mind

You nee to stop using a 🎮, get a mouse and keyboard and a good gpu

Apart from controls everything looks and felt great. Especially you'll feel challenged. Even at easy mode i'm dying frequently.
Ammo shortage keeps it realistic. great TPS game in my book. 8.5

i kinda agree with this. The story is simply remarkable and this game will be spoken of for the next few decades when it comes to the progression of narratives in gaming. But I hated most of the gameplay. Sure it's SUPPOSED to be generic, but if it had a different style, I'd love this ingenious story so much more.

I can't help but feel it'd be better if it was free-roaming across the beautiful map and having the option to stealth your way through. Or maybe playing like Heavy Rain etc. But fuck it, as much as I dislike the gameplay, I'll play this game for the rest of my days. The story is THAT darn good, and I can't wait for the next game. Props to the writers because....damn, man.
