Very well made video of a VERY NON- PROFESSIONAL sound person. My big dissagreements follow: ONE: The Deity Connect is quite long away from being a professional wireless kit as you say. It is definitely a big bottleneck of this setup, not the recorder, which is great. The 2.4Ghz system is never more reliable than even a cheapest UHF system. Go Deity Theos or Senn. G4 instead. TWO: I quite don´t understand why aren´t you using a wired boom setup instead. It is much more reliable and adds no additional weight to a boompole. Even the best wireless systems out there that cost 3500 US per channel are not the same quality as a cable boom connection. The best cable costs a fraction of this unprofessional DEITY CONNECT wireless stuff solution. While you (obviously) need your lavs to be wireless, you don´t need this with boom at all. Wired boom is often the only audio source that saves you when anything goes wrong in the air. THREE: The Same critics go to your praised wireless headphones setup ! Using this, you definitely hear something completely different than a real audio quality that´s being recorded ! IN other words, you are making yourself deff in order to safe one cable. The bluetooth connection compromises the quality of the sound A LOT. My little advice to all viewers: never use this setup if you want to be at least called a sound person. Yeah, this setup is wireless. That´s not to be contradicted . A few above descibed changes could make this a "so so audio solution", though.

Cool! Thank you for the video! Now (4 years later) I wonder if there is another way (maybe easier) set-up? Are there already wireless mics that can be connected to a camera even? And I don't mean those lav mics. Would be great if could help me out with that.

For people looking to build their audio kit, please please do not plug your headphones into a rode wireless. 1) You're going to look like an amateur on set and 2) you're adding more troubleshooting headache if you start to hear rf noise/interference (is it the notoriously bad Rode Go or is it the Deity?). Also, the boom mic is the wireless fail safe. You mentioned something about "now I don't even need the bag, I can just walk away with my wireless boom pole to monitor audio". The whole point of the bag is to allow you to be mobile. And if you have a bag that lets you be mobile, then you should be using an xlr cable with that boom mic as a wireless failsafe. Just seems like an easy way to post your affiliate link to a product even if it's such a bad idea to use that device in the way shown in this video.

Thanks for your review. You were already waking towards the future over three years ago. I like the spirit.
I have a few observations and hope they will be useful to some people and will begin paraphrasing the great Horace Greeley :“Go wireless, young man, and grow up with the industry”

I read many critics to your idea of going wireless. Many of them are dated just like your review is . I said you review is "dated" because I guess that today you would use the Deity HD-TX plug-on transmitter with on board recording in your boom mic set up. It would be much simpler than using the Connection transmitter and would add the option of a back up with the on board recording to card. But I think the HD TX wasn't available when you started your wireless project

I am sorry but I think the idea of wireless monitoring is not a good one at all, besides being rather complicated and breaking the “keep things in the family idea” by using Rode and Deity instead of Deity only .

On that, the Deity HD TX does have a headphone port for proper monitoring of the audio.

I am determined to stop using wired lavalieres as I am really tired of asking people “could you please pass the wire under your clothes”. Many people feel uncomfortable and the most important thing in an interview is that the interviewee feels comfortable. Besides, wireless lavs save time.

I’ve read many comments about the unreliability of wireless mics and how often the sound drops etc. I was a little surprised. I shot news using Sennheiser and Rode wireless mics for many years and never ever had a single drop in the sound.

And I think that working with AA or AAA batteries is rather primitive. I am completely in favour of built in batteries. Some wireless mics, such as Picogear, can last up to 20 hours if the transmitter is less than 5 m from the receiver and 10 hours if is more than 5 meters from the receiver. That is more than enough for most shootings . You can always charge built in batteries during breaks and there are always breaks. And you can mute the mic when not in use. You don't only mute the mic on the Picogear receiver. You also disconnect the radio link, what makes the mic consume almost no power.

And then there is the hassle of external batteries. I have to keep buying them, and every time I needed to change the batteries of the Rode plug-on transmitter, for example, I had to detach the mic from the Rode and then remove the holster, open the battery door, remove the batteries, put them somewhere in my backpack, put new batteries, put the holster again and then attach the mic again. Primitive way of working.

All I need to do to recharge the Deity HD TX plug-on transmitter is to plug it on the mains if I am at home or a power bank if I am out.

But there is more: I can’t just throw AA or AAA batteries in the bin at home. I have to take them to my local library where they have a recycling system for the disposal of batteries.

I have four wireless kits: Deity, Picogear, Godox and Rode. They serve different purposes.

I’ve retired the Rode because it uses batteries and because Deity’s kit is better. If my kits were powered by AA or AAA batteries then I would need to keep removing their batteries regularly to avoid leakages as I would not be using the three of them at the same time.

Wireless mics and built in batteries are the way to go.

This is awesome. Trying to some thing like this with Wireless Go II. Audio out appears to be Line level -- or for some other reason there no audio monitoring with a headphone jack. Was that a change or am I missing something?

It looks awesome but I am a little concerned with the reliability of such a setup. Based on my own experience, everytime I have rigged up a sophisticated combo of my own cooking so it is “just the way I want it”, it always work at first but then little inconveniences start adding and popping up. In the end, the reliability is simply not solid enough for serious use. But again that is just me. Nicely done.

I'm sorry for the dislike for this one, Caleb. You made a lot of effort doing this video and I appreciate that, but you clearly don't understand a lot of the problems with this setup and i suggest next time you stick to camera's or maybe research harder:)
this setup is not a professional setup by any means. Maybe a prosumer who likes to play it risky. Also, the wireless go next to your head is not something i would recommend to people.

Hi Caleb, i’m using the Dt3 and the deity connect but sometimes I have big problems with they disconnecting randomly, got in touch with deity and they replaced the transmitter… it got a little bit better but another thing is that when I comparared with the rode wireless go, and it sounded way better, like was happening to gerald undone, in my case the deity products sounded a little cheap, but i love the way they function! any tip in what to do to make them better? by the way, brilliant idea using the rode on the headphone!
