Ashley CHUNG

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ashley Chung graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in music with first class at Hong Kong Baptist University, where she studied the piano with Dr. Cheung Pang Jane and Dr. Sophia Yang respectively. During her undergraduate years, Ashley became increasingly interested in world music, and began to study the yangqin, the Chinese hammered dulcimer. Her honors thesis discusses the modern history of the yangqin, using an idle hammered dulcimer named chang acquired on a trip to Xinjiang in 2017 as a case study to reflect on the impact of political and cultural ideologies on Chinese musical performance since 1949.
Ashley continued to explore the hammered dulcimer family around the world after graduation. She was introduced to Iranian music through Ensemble Kamaan in 2019, where her journey in Iranian music began. She is currently studying the santur with Iranian musician and composer Mr. Sepehr Rafiiean.
Ashley is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in music at her alma mater, and is the recipient of UGC Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme 2020/21. Apart from academic pursuit, Ashley enjoys working particularly with children. She teaches piano and early childhood music programs both in her private studio and with Seed Music Academy, Hong Kong, where she adopts the Kodaly, Orff, Dalcroze and Montessori approaches into her classes, as she strongly believes that speech, singing and movements are integral in children’s musical development.
