We do that in Germanic languages too but the prefixes have become petrified and they were treated like new verbs. I wonder if this is one of the reasons why Proto-Germanic and Proto-Baltic-Russian are thought to be close?

I was wondering why I keep seeing на in front of some past tense verbs. I guess i will get the explanation eventually in my language book for many of these prefixes.

What's so "perfect" or "imperfect" about verbs? The original meaning of "perfect" (in Latin which was used when they were coming up with grammatical terms) was "complete." A perfective verb describes an action that is complete or has a definite ending. An imperfective verb describes an action that is incomplete or ongoing or had no definite ending.

Imperfective comes from the Latin word "perfectus" meaning "done, completed, finished". Therefore being the Russian я играл being translated with "I was playing" , focusing on the process in action, you call it imperfective ❤ ps we have a similar tense in Italian called imperfetto which is presenting facts in activity. You see, languages are all connected and LOVELY ❤❤ спасибо

Imperfective is like progressive. In English we add to be + verb ing to make it progressive. In Russian the addition goes to the Perfective, like PO to the past

I have prefix in my language. But i think the concept of your prefix slightly off (Im not sure) -> about the losing and winning. The fact prefix I completely agree that one is a prefix.

So let me validate this. Here is my explanation , usually prefix doesnt change the basic concept/meaning of the word. for example "ordinary" and "unordinary" , both these word have the same meaning/concept/main idea, that "ordinary" ,

But the "вы" change the word to completely different things. So, here is my question , are you sure that is really a prefix ?

I have just started learning Russian and I have just learnt the difference between the 2 aspects. And your explanations are so great as in just a couple of minutes they teach all the necessary concepts. Tks !!!!

I’ve heard someone say the perfect I’ve aspect denotes doing and action and getting it done, that is finishing it. So Я поиграл is doing something and finishing it, finishing playing. This helped me tremendously to understand the perfective and imperfective aspect

In Duolingo the sentence "people from all around the world buy our computers" is translated as "Люди со всего мира покупают наши компьютеры". why is perfective form used here? the "buy" doesn't refer to a "complete action" but to an ongoing action

Thanks

I thought imperfective and perfective just meant. perfective: process/action that is complete. imperfective: is incomplete action thus still on going. Don't know if it's right though.

If "по" makes the verb a fact as in "I played." vs "I was playing.", and выиграл means "I won." How do you add the "process" part for the word выиграл and change it from " I won." to "I was winning."? Since "выиграл" already has a prefix.

Pre-Igral lliterally means OVER PLAYED and Vigral means IN-PLAYED (losed). I don't know why Russians write PRO and say PRE.
I guess that is because Germans imposed a Germanic RULE into Russian language of writing ONE LETTER (like O) and pronouncing ANOTHER (A) like saying RA-SI-YA and writing RO-SI-YA (ROSSIYA). I think they wanted to change the meaning of Rasiya where RA-means light and SIYA-means shines. So RASIYA ("Rossiya"/"Russia") is the land where the sun shines from east to west. Best regards from Serbia.

The explanation (90% of the video) was very clear. In past tense I could've been playing or I could've finished playing, and the prefix по is used to differentiate those two cases.

The introductory sentence is what is still a puzzle to me. In present tense я хочу играть is said to be incorrect, BUT whatever I am doing is the present can only be a "process" as soon as the process is over it becomes the past, so я хочу поиграть should be the incorrect version, no? What am I missing?

Спасибо in advance!!

Both statements are FACTS, that is “I am playing on the computer” and “i was playing on the computer”. The real difference between these 2 aspectual verbs are “process” vs “result”. I think the word “fact” is confusing.
