The Labour Party’s decision to prohibit virginity testing is yet another example of state overreach into personal and cultural matters. While some may find the practice controversial, banning it outright ignores personal choice, medical autonomy, and religious or cultural traditions. Instead of prohibition, education and informed consent should be prioritised, allowing individuals to make their own decisions without government interference.

It's sad we need this law to combat barbaric practices that weren't existing here 30 years ago.

This is the problem when a country naively opens up its Immigration Pathway and underestimates cultural practices. Working in a multi cultural business I have found some Asian and South East Asian beliefs are very strict in regards to young women and marriage. There can be gaps in health care because of this. One example is some resistance to girls being inoculated with Gardasil. Some families think this is an admission to sexual activities. The under reporting of STDs from married women because their husband's can do no wrong.
Marriage is a business transaction in some cases between families. This is why some countries heavily favour First Cousin Marriages because of inherent trust In family conduct.

A ban on male genital mutilation/circumcision would also be good, but unfortunately our politicians love appeasing the Muslim lobby. We need to make it clear that we don't tolerate harmful and oppressive religious practices in this country.

Unscientific, indeed. There are a few reasons why the hymen might not be intact, including vigorous exercise, tampon use...the pelvic exam itself might break a hymen. Some girls are born with a broken hymen. So, stupid practice without merit. End it.

Sounds like the Crimes Act (or SVL Act) needs a tighten-up around influenced or coerced consent regarding sexual violations if not already covered (Part 128A?).
