"Hei Li, Hei Lo" is a traditional PA Dutch folk song that was most likely brought to America with the first wave of PD immigrants in the late 1600s. The melody and use of the phrase Hei Li, Hei Lo, is found in the folk music of south-western Germany and the Alsace region of France. The song was often sung by children and most likely one of the first songs that they learned. These PD lyrics tell of life on the farm and surviving the depression. Given that, we can date them to at least post-1930. The song is often sung at PD Versommlings (gatherings) throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. The use of the dulcimer, a traditional PD folk instrument, on this recording demonstrates how this song might have been accompanied in the 1700 and 1800s.
