Asuna stared out of the giant, golden colored bird cage, the thin bars the only thing between her and freedom. Yet her captor, the very man she'd hated nearly since she'd met him, who'd had the audacity to believe he had a right to her, was although disgusting, nonetheless crafty. She could try to squeeze between the bars all she liked. Since her last escape attempt, which had ended with only a partial failure thanks to the keycard she'd snagged and managed to keep hidden within the dress Sugou made her wear at all times in this virtual realm, he'd told her that he'd added new code to the massive tree of... wherever here was. As soon as she stepped foot outside the bird cage, she'd be immediately teleported right back inside, the security passcode changed, and the guards alerted.

How long had she been here?

She didn't know anymore. SAO was over. It had to be. She'd WATCHED the world she'd been trapped in, along with thousands of others, be destroyed. She'd sacrificed herself in a game where death was real, it was as real as any death in the real world. But she'd never woken up, and now she knew that many others hadn't either.

"What can I do? Is there anything at all?" she thought to herself, fighting back the tears in her eyes that she knew would be coming all too quickly.

"There's nothing you can do. Just give up."


She tried to shut out that defeating voice lurking in the dark corners of her psyche, but every day that she was trapped in this place, it grew louder and more convincing.

"Kirito... where are you?" she asked, nobody around to hear her.



The world was as silent as ever.



"Mommy!"

Asuna shook her head. Now she was hearing the voice of the closest thing to a daughter she'd ever had, the sentient AI girl named Yui. It had to be a trick, just another one of Sugou's sadistic games meant to break her.

"Mommy!"

It was just a trick. Just another way to break her. That's all anything was now.

"MOMMY!"

But it sounded so real.

"MOMMY!"

The voice cried out again. But this time, she listened.

It wasn't a trick. It wasn't a hallucination.

It was real.

Asuna sighed a breath of relief that felt so good to let out, to feel like she still had hope. If Yui was here, that meant-

Her heart caught in her throat. She had to act. Sugou surely had prepared for his arrival. The two of them would need help from inside, and her ill-fated escape attempt had yielded just the aid that they needed. It had to be.

She pulled the keycard out of her dress and held it out of the cage through the bars. If he missed this, then chances were they'd be unable to stop Sugou before he forcibly married her.

She sighed.

Who was she kidding? This was Kirito she was thinking about. Brave to a fault, stubborn as a rock, and at times, as dense as one too. She smiled fondly. He was all of those things and more. But there was one thing she knew well, something she was counting on at this very moment.

He didn't miss.

She dropped the keycard into the air.

"Kirito... Thank you..."
