What's the Difference Between a MAC address and an IP Address?

Can't we just move/copy the ipv6 to the Data Link Layer and use it instead of MAC address?
I know it will cost a lot of money and time, but is it possible?

The first 3 bytes of a MAC address allow you to identify the manufacturer of the network card...

Thank you for the nice topic... If I may add, IP address is considered logical address used by routing protocols, while MAC address is physical address that is used by switching protocols , both types of protocols plus others are needed for effective data transmission.
