Thanks for the breakdown, this sucks for the little dev but I can't fully blame ES either. Didn't seem like a straight up cash grab like it usually is.
OSS needs a corporate specific licence I think. Not even just cost based, but a contribution and non-compete clause too. Who defines corporate and how will be fought over bitterly no doubt but FAANG would be a good start.
Great video! I think OSS is a great distribution model for the next gen of software companies. You get people to use your software for free, get feedback from them to continue to improve it. Then hit up investors, raise a couple mil and commercialize it. From my experience (I've sold at 3 OSS companies including MongoDB), Devs at enterprises now have a lot more say in the tools they use, so it's easier to sell to larger companies if their teams are using/familiar with open source project.
ОтветитьWhat about confluent Kafka?
Ответитьthe gpl is a hate crime against open source software
change my mind
NEVER EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE WORDPRESS
Ответить@Fireship - What's the update on the state of Elastic Search one year later?
ОтветитьI am 100% in agreement with you that Elastic Search screwed it up. I have zero interest using their services at this point will go with AWS OpenSearch instead.
ОтветитьAmazon really shat on the open-source movement with this.
They could have easily paid a tiny portion of their earnings as a licensing fee but decided to screw Elasticsearch and take advantage of opensource instead.
Imo, the SSPL ought to be considered a Free software license, it's purpose is to prevent people from building closed-source SaaS using free software. Yes, that is a restriction, but it's basically self-defense for the ethics of free software, so it's a justifiable restriction. I wonder why the FSF hasn't released any statement on it.
Ответитьjeff bezos is EVIL
ОтветитьI've been learning ElasticSearch today and it is so bad, makes me want to throw up!
ОтветитьHonestly I don't think there's anything wrong with requiring companies that generate certain amounts of revenue with your software to pay back into it. Kinda like how Unity's licensing scheme works.
Ответитьthey got paid off
ОтветитьThis reminds me of "The Internet Boy" Aaron Swartz, who did many brilliant things but committed suicide because he was exploited by the government for nothing 😡
ОтветитьGPL is the best for protecting freedom and open sourceness of your software
ОтветитьElasticSearch should have used the GPL licence
ОтветитьCan community create an open source license that can be used for free but if you have more than let's say 500 customers then you pay a small amount, like 1 percent to the company hosting the opensource project?
Call it open 1% license for example.
Aws would not mind to get 99% per customer and give ES 1 %
If a lot of companies pay 1% , then open source community will still benefit
Off course you can always clone source code but the license does not change you always have to pay 1% for more than 500 users.
I think its like video games. Some you can play and enjoy for free. But you have to pay for faster Progress , time savings.
In the end the user contributes growth to the network and is therefore creates value of the product.
Thank you for your great videos <3
Big guys do it again against any odds
Ответитьwhat a great channel, curious to explore more about elasticsearch, hopefully, you can give us a concise explanation about this topic! you guys are doing amazing work!
ОтветитьAre these videos open source? 🗿
ОтветитьFk Amazon, fk Bezos
ОтветитьI just don't get why they didn't go with the AGPL...
ОтветитьPeople that don't understand that the future is the service and not the product are walking to their extinction
ОтветитьFork you is the most neerdy insult you can make! ♥️😂
ОтветитьI think Elasticsearch will win the AWS Opensearch. AWS is building to integrate with their other services. Elasticsearch is more stand-alone in their development.
ОтветитьWhoa it’s crazy that I found this video now! I’ve been looking for a way to monetize my content and since I’ve been building a whole cloud-based pipeline for AI-based VFX and have no interest in making the code proprietary (probably couldn’t anyway since most of those AI models don’t allow commercial use), I thought I’d offer access to the infrastructure itself for a small fee so that fellow artists can use the models on their videos without having to navigating the AWS maze.
That sounds pretty similar to the elastic search/Wordpress model you described so I’m excited to learn I might have the right mindset for it.
Awesome content. The way you explain in calm voice and say mit licence do whatever the hell you want it funny :)
ОтветитьAwesome!!! The each time I see a video from this channel my dopamine levels get bursted 😍
ОтветитьThe reason why those tech giants are so excited about Open Source ideas is an ability to get their hands on the best individuals in the industry without paying them a cent back, plus to avoid expenses on their employment(insurances, hiring process, managment, gyms, facilities, relocation etc). Let's not underestimate their talents in manipulating and agenda as well. However, no company knows limits of being wealthy, so Amazon decided to benefit even more...
In this particular situation, they most likely have exploited a finance insecurity of the smaller company and "encouraged" the right people to make the right descisions for a good offer.
You westerns are known for putting too much trust in official (bla-bla) versions, meanwhile I was taught to deal with corruption, uhm, let's call it "unnoficial way of solving problems" on a daily basis(as a former russian citizen).
No romantics, just know that often times you see such unlogical (at first glance) descisions made by politicians, government officials, mass media or business owners - be sure they shaked their hands and dealt how to earn some money/loyalty/goods(a gift, service, promise given), to say, the fastest way...
What is so special about this, when there is one former president that almost started a civil war for his own profit and a small group of people standing behind him, lmao. God blessed America this time, fortunately.
Personally why I don’t want to use AWS for a project, wether you agree or not this is anti competitive behavior. I would use elastic as well but doesn’t fit any of my projects. I still use mongo though, and I don’t plan on throwing that on aws
ОтветитьIf only they could CNTRL + Z
ОтветитьAwesome just like always!!!!!!
So much information that I have no idea if I would get to know some day.
Appreciate the great content!
And I really hope you reach to 1 M subs soon.
I don't think is bad. It is about business strategy. I think the Elastic team needs to sit down and think about how to get a competitive advantage out of the situation. The other thing is, Elastic can't compare with AWS, Elastic is probably jealous that AWS is squeezing with a platform they started implementing over 10 years ago.
Ответитьhahahaha not one person will ever sign a CLA again.
ОтветитьIts just so sad. Big companies doing such things..
Also, that extra info on last chapter is 🥇
What do you think about Microsoft's trend towards more open source software? VS code, Windows terminal and the whole .NET ecosystem...why are they doing that?
ОтветитьI don't know enough about this particular case but I am absolutely sure that code once released as open source (e.g. GNU or MIT) can't be reverted to commercial or even to more restrictive open source license. It is different matter if parts of the code were commercially licensed and the owner decides to no longer allow the use of his commercial code. For the open source part though that can't be applied. Open source code stays that way for ever and anyone who uses it should release it the same way.
EDIT: OK, I read a bit about the case. It seems that from a legal point of view the proprietary code can be withdrawn or licensed in a different way. I won't comment the moral point of view of that case. It is possible though that the open source contributors might have made a mistake supporting a project that is partly commercially licensed. I myself would do that only if the commercial code is fairly easy to reproduce as open source. Otherwise you are at the mercy of someone that wants to make money and the conflict is just a matter of time as it seems to be in the above case. Richard Stallman is quite right to insist on 100% open source code.
How the hell you connect all these dots???¿
ОтветитьThis was explained very well. Fireship IO is awesome. Kudos!
ОтветитьWait so I can sued from an MIT?
ОтветитьFireship. is Awesome 🔥
ОтветитьSo... You thought 2020 was bad?
ОтветитьNote that permission granted by open source license are often seen as irrevocable. You can never take it back after you license your code out.
ОтветитьGPLv3!!!!
ОтветитьHow do you create thumbnails?
ОтветитьThat's why I prefer GPL, if it's open, it should remain open!
