I'm confused.

I love the song "Straight to Hell," by The Clash. That band wrote and performed some of the greatest punk songs that remain powerful and relevant to this day. So borrowing the theme from this song for Paper Planes is simply genius as it shows deference to some of the great ones.

Then, I hear some of the lyrics from this rap song, I see this pretty girl singing them and there's this sweetness, almost a soft innocence to her voice, and I cling to her words and attempt to parse out the poetry, understand the underlying spiritual radiance it might possess. Then it cuts to the gunshots and the cash register ring which, granted, is super cool, but then her message in regards to it destroys the fact she's borrowed one of the most iconic song tracks--"Straight to Hell" one that bears one of the most poignant anti-war messages in music history--and has couched it in a message that is soulless and insipid. Everyone isn't a winner. Smoking pot, forgery, robbery and murder for what? a few dollars? This isn't revolutionary. The Jolly Roger? The poisoning of the system? You're a tool of the system. You are manufacturing an empty, catchy message of nothingness. This is mind numbing, a musical opioid, simply here and propagated to distract people from real issues.

Certainly, struggling to survive and earning resource to lead a decent life isn't bad, but romanticizing criminality, criminality you aren't a perpetrator of, so you can capitalize on the idiocy of mindless listeners, and people who think the outlaw life is the only life, is vile and disgusting.

Again, I'm confused, you've got Mike D and Ad-Rock in your video, probably some other famous people I'm clueless about, and it I'm left scratching my head. And I realize, indeed, M.I.A., her song, is merely held aloft on the merit of The Clash alone, everything else is meaningless, light, vapid, like a paper plane, easily destroyed, easily lost, simply forgotten.

If only Paper Planes was about the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. If only the 271 million views and the 2.3 million likes led to more awareness about the ravages those people suffer and the ongoing plight of Sri Lanka as a whole, perhaps she, and this catchy song, could have been more than ephemeral flying things, but instead something of salvation, something substantive and angelic, bearing grace in its avenging and revolutionary spirit. But no, it's just about smoking pot and hustling people for a few bucks. Terrible.
