Great interview with Sting and enjoyed the insights on the songs. I think “Fields of Gold” is the finest love song ever written and holding my wife listening to that song is a sublime pleasure in my life. Love the energy and strength of “ I Wrote Your Name (Upon My Heart).

Thank you for this interview. Really found it interesting and revealing. Both of you connected so well about various lyrical parts and it provided insight about both of you that all of us appreciate and understand on a personal level. Great music and songs are so powerful reaching the most personal and fundamental aspects of our being. We strive for peace, understanding, enlightenment and joy in varying measures everyday, and as time passes, we really never know how a musical artist will continue to still impact us, sometimes differently, as the years and decades pass. His artistry, musicianship, creativity and humanism has resonated since the late 70s via his early songs with the Police and through many of his solo albums and songs since. His first couple solo albums I was heavily exposed to a little while after their release, so it is so amazing how I still react so strongly to many songs of these albums today. Your conservation with Sting about Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales was thoughtful and personal in how you brought out Sting's inspiration and ideas on particular songs and lyrics. Sting's music from the 70s to now has made him one of my all-time personal favorites just like Lennon and McCartney are also among my all-time favorites. Funny, how you both discussed those artists and how significant they are. I may have put down too much, but sometimes the words keep coming about something that was done touchingly and thoughtfully. Hope your future remains abundantly joyous and reflective. All the best!

You can tell when Sting is really enjoying the person who he is talking to in these interviews. He’s always polite but with some people he’s more open and.. warm I think is the word I’m looking for.

He really enjoyed this talk.

I would have asked him about the song When We Dance. I was in a bad marriage at the time. I wanted to have that feeling with someone, and I knew it wasn't going to ever be with him. 28 years later, and I'm still waiting.

What fascinating interview. I love the fact that you didn’t pick every breath you take or one of his other big sellers to make the focus of the interview. That’s whatever everybody else does and those are not his or the police best songs.

You are a very interesting man Professor and that you’re enthusiastic about those songs but you take time to go through the catalog and find the real nuggets.

I also loved his reference to the madeleine. Remembrance of things past was a revelatory book for me as well, especially the parts where they talk about sexual obsession.

Congratulations on scoring an interview w/Sting! A week or so late here, but I wanted to give it my full attention. His solo albums were among the Sony Walkman soundtracks to my introverted teen years. So I've been listening to and rediscovering The Dream of the Blue Turtles and Soul Cages lately.🐢

The Police were one of my favorite bands in the early '80s, but they'd broken up before I even knew it. One of my first and most memorable concerts was Sting at the Boston Garden on Feb. 5, 1988 (yes, I had to google that). He and his band did (not just one or two, but...) three encores for a total of 24 songs, including some from The Police, along with his heartrending rendition of Hendrix's "Little Wing", which made me cry that night as I recall - and still does today.🪽

In the past couple years, I've been trying to catch all those artists I didn't get to see long ago. In June, I saw Andy Summers here in town, and if I can get tix, maybe I'll come full circle by seeing Sting's upcoming show at MGM Boston. Sorry for the long comment, but his music is worthy of rhapsody. So I look forward to the next part of this conversation.🐝

Sting gave me a lift for over 150 miles. Hitchhiking from London, heading home to liverpool. Evening, light fading, getting cooler. A friendly bloke stopped and off we went. It took me a while to realise. "A musician" he said when I asked. I looked properly and saw, the biggest star in the world! My God what a shock!.
That was in, I think, 1980. I was a ragged 18 year old. Not yet established in any way. Given a chance to speak to a hugely successful man.
What a gentleman. What dignity and insightfulness. A sense of fun too.
Sting, I remember much of what we spoke of and have referred to your words many times. Important. Many thanks mate.

In the late '90s, Sting did a documentary on PBS about my Great-greatxxx grandfather John Dowland and his music. He was a famous musician in his time. Sting learned to play the lute, Dowland's instrument of choice. It was very well done, and Sting has always had a place in my heart since.

Great interview! An interview from the heart on both sides. You made him verklempt!! I wonder if he's ever said that about anyone else who interviewed him? I saw the Police three times - the last time on the Synchronicity Tour. Then I saw the Dream of the Blue Turtles tour. Had kids in there and concerts just weren't high on the list of priorities after that. Especially with the rising prices. I would love to take my son to a Sting concert someday.

About the relationship between music and kids, one of my favorite moments was at the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. I was chaperoning a group of about 50 Boy Scouts. As we walked into the HOF, everyone started breaking up into friend groups to walk through. I overheard my 16 year old son telling his friends that he wanted to go with me because I really liked that kind of stuff. We spent 3 hours wandering around the museum together. I was so touched that my teenage son chose to hang out with me over his friends. It still chokes me up years later.

Fields of Gold and Every Breath You Take are 2 of my top 10 songs. So many other great ones from solos and with The Police.

I once used “Fragile” as background music to a home video compilation of my oldest son as a baby and toddler. He is now in his prime and is anything but fragile.

Once upon a time, when Sting picked up and played French Horn, my respect for him went over the top from the already high place it was. Incredible! One of the hardest instruments on this earth to master. His genius is Glorioso! Singing Renaissance songs heard on Classic Arts Showcase, yet another example of the genius of Gordon Sumner.
